DURANT, Okla. — Henderson State turned in one of its best all-around performances of the year on Tuesday afternoon and used a dominant second half to roll past Great American Conference leader Southeastern Oklahoma State 80-65 at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
The Reddies (8-3, 3-2) got off to a strong start on the road and used two 3-pointers from Rel Johnson to jump out to an early 11-3 lead, but the Savage Storm (7-2, 3-2) slowly crept back and out-scored Henderson by nine over the final 16 minutes of the opening frame to take a 35-34 advantage into the break. Southeastern was 7-for-14 from beyond the arc in the first half.
With the game tied at 45-45 early in the second the Reddies put together the run that defined the game, as three 3-pointers — one from Johnson and two from Chris Parker — as well as a couple tough buckets from Raekwon Rogers jump-started an 18-4 Henderson run, which broke the game open and gave the Reddies complete control with a 63-49 lead with 8:51 to go in the game.
The Savage Storm tried to get back into it and used a 4-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 63-53, but that would be as close as they would come, as a thunderous dunk via an offensive rebound from Rogers swung momentum back in Henderson's direction and the Reddies never let SOSU make it close late in a huge 80-65 win.Â
The Reddies defense locked down the Savage Storm in the second half and held SOSU to just 7-for-26 shooting from the field. On the offensive end, HSU was 7-for-12 from beyond the arc in the second period and out-rebounded Southeastern 47-27 in the game.
Johnson led Henderson with 19 points and hit five 3-pointers while Rogers added a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Parker had 16 points and Mike Fofana finished with 10.
Henderson's next game comes after the turn of the calendar year. The Reddies will play Oklahoma Baptist at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2019 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
