HSU Softball Finishes 4-0 at ESU Classic

Henderson State completed the Emporia State Classic unbeaten as the Reddies beat Pittsburg State 12-11 and Missouri Southern State 8-0, to finish the two-day event 4-0.

Henderson, 8-3 on the season, outslugged Pittsburg State in the opener as the Reddies clubbed 17 hits including eight for extra bases.

The Reddies scored four runs in both the first and second-innings. Bethany Allen led off the game with a solo home run, with Ashleigh Erb hitting a three-run blast later in the opening frame.

In the Reddie second, Christianna Camp collected a two-run double with Erb having a RBI triple to put Henderson on top 8-3.

Pittsburg made the score 8-7 scoring three runs in the fifth, but Nadia Ballarin put HSU up 9-7 with a solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth while Erb collected another home run in the sixth, a two-run bomb. Kailey Reese added a RBI double in the inning to put the Reddies on top 12-8.

Again PSU would answer with three runs in the seventh-inning, but Kaitlyn Felder got out of the inning to preserve the win for Becca Almond.

Erb was 3-for-4 in the game with two home runs, a triple and six runs batted in to lead the Reddies. Courtney Warren and Lindsey Williams both had three hits, while Allen, Ballarin and Reese had two hits each.

The Reddies run-ruled Missouri Southern in the final game scoring three runs in the third, four in the fourth and a single run in the fifth-inning.

Henderson took advantage of four walks, three hit batters and three MSSU errors.

Williams and Madie Green led HSU offensively with two hits and a RBI each.

Sydney Bonner pitched a three-hit shutout while striking out four batters to pick up the win in the circle.

Henderson State will next begin Great American Conference play next weekend when the Reddies travel to Shawnee, Okla.to face Oklahoma Baptist with a double-header beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
