HSU Softball Opens Season with Win Over Southwest Baptist

Henderson State opened the 2018 softball season with an 8-0 win over Southwest Baptist in the first game of the Ronnie Hawkins Memorial Tournament at Dee White Field.

The Reddies, 1-1 on the season, lost game two of the tournament to Rogers State as the Hillcats shutout Henderson 5-0.

Against SBU, Henderson took a 3-0 lead in the second-inning as the Reddies loaded the bases with the help of a pair of walks and a hit batter.

Olivia Trapp drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly that plated Ashleigh Erb who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.

Henderson added a run on a double-steal with Kailey Reese scoring on the play, followed by Bethany Allen lacing a single up the middle to score Alexia Lopez to make the score 3-0.

The Reddies scored four additional runs in the fourth with the help of five walks and a triple by Alexis Morton.

In the sixth frame, Courtney Warren led off with a single to left-centerfield and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lindsey Williams entered the game to run for Warren and scored on a fielding error by Southwest Baptist to end the game.

Michelle Sorensen pitched a complete game striking out three batters while surrendering three hits in the shutout victory.

Henderson managed just three hits in the loss to Rogers State.

Warren combined to go 3-for-6 on the day with a run batted in, while Bethany Allen was 2-for-6 with 2 RBI.

The Reddies will take on Missouri S&T on Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m. at Dee White Field.
