Zack Gray's three-run home run and
Zach Eschberger's third complete game on the mound helped Henderson State earn a split of Arkansas Tech Sunday at Clyde Berry Field.
Â
Arkansas Tech, 11-9 overall and 6-5 in the Great American Conference, rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win the first game 7-5, with the Reddies winning the nightcap 6-1.
Â
In the second game, the Reddies went down in order the first three-innings before striking for three runs in the fourth.
Â
ATU pitcher Zack Kesterson hit Reddie leadoff batter
Bryson Haskins to lead off the frame.
Jordan Harris collected his first of the day with a single just off the glove of Tech shortstop Connor Brady.
Â
Gray stepped to the plate and got ahead in the count 3-0. Kesterson worked his way back to a full count on the Reddie first baseman. Gray, however, took Kesterson's next offering over the centerfield fence for his third home run of the season to give Henderson a 3-0 lead.
Â
ATU answered with a run in the fifth as Jake Harvey doubled off the wall to left field and later scored on a Harry Gard sacrifice fly.
Â
Henderson, 13-7 and 8-3 in the GAC, added three runs in the sixth-inning as
Brandon Pollock reached on a one out single to right field and scored when
Brentten Schwaab lined a double to right-centerfield.
Â
The inning continued when
Nolan Ryan reached on an error to put runners on first and second. With two outs,
Daniel Colasanto fell behind in the count 0-2 before working it full. The sophomore third baseman delivered a two-run double to center field to give the Reddies some insurance runs.
Â
Eschberger went the distance on the mound striking out four batters and allowing just one run on five hits to improve to 3-0 on the year. Â
Â
In game one of the series, Henderson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game with the help of three home runs beginning with Schwaab's solo blast to lead off the third-inning.
The inning continued with
Joe Myers reaching on an infield single followed by a two-run homer by Ryan to make the score 3-0.
Â
With two outs in the Reddie fourth, Myers walked and Ryan then hit a shot off the right-field wall with right fielder Harry Gard getting caught in the fence and the ball rolling to the corner which allowed Ryan to round the bases and give the Reddies a 5-0 advantage.
Â
ATU, however, scored two unearned runs in the sixth-inning with Riley Hickerson providing a two-out, two-run triple to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Â
In the seventh-inning, the Wonder Boys again took advantage of another Reddie error that led to five unearned runs. The big hits came with two outs as Gard and Dylan McDearman hit back-to-back doubles to give Tech a 7-5 advantage.
Â
The Reddies managed just one hit after Ryan's inside-the-park home run in the fourth as Michael Mueller got the win on the mound for ATU pitching 8 innings while striking out six to improve to 2-2.
Â
Schwaab and Ryan led Henderson's offense with two hits each.
Â
The two teams will play the series finale on Monday with the first pitch at Clyde Berry Field set for 1 p.m.
