Arkansas Tech used a pair of home runs to get by Henderson State as the Wonder Boys beat the Reddies 8-5, Monday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.
The Wonder Boys, 12-9 overall and 7-5 in the Great American Conference, first struck when Riley Hickerson hit a grand slam to right field after Tech batters reached on three straight walks.
Henderson, 13-8 and 8-4 in the GAC, would slowly fight back with the Reddies scoring their first run in the bottom half of the inning.
Jordan Harris reached on a two-out single to right field, stole second, and scored on
Zack Gray's single to right.
In the Reddies' half of the seventh,
Daniel Colasanto reached when he was hit by a pitch. With one-out,
Brandon Pollock singled with Colasanto advancing to third. Harris then laced a single through the left side to score Colasanto. Henderson's final run of the inning came on Gray's fielder's choice that plated Pollock to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Arkansas Tech, however, responded with four runs in the eighth-inning with the help of five hits including a three-run home run by Mark Vaughn as the Wonder Boys extended their lead to 8-3.
The Reddies added a run in the bottom of the eighth as Colasanto hit a two-out single to center field to score
Bryson Haskins who walked earlier in the inning after advancing to third on a
Caleb Carr base hit.
Again the Reddies threatened in the ninth-inning as Harris and Gray led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners advance on a wild pitch before
Taylor Langston grounded out to second to score Harris.
ATU relief pitcher Degan Harte was able to get out of the inning without any more damage by recording a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
Henderson outhit Arkansas Tech 12 to 10 with Harris going 4-for-5 with a run batted in. Gray and Colasanto each had two hits and a RBI for the Reddies.
Henderson will travel to Memphis on Tuesday for a non-conference game against Christian Brothers with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
