Henderson Takes Two from UAM Friday

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got big performances from Alexia Lopez, Christianna Camp and Madie Green to take two games from Arkansas-Monticello on Friday and seize a 2-0 series lead after the first day.

The Reddies (20-13, 12-10) and Blossoms (4-26, 4-16) face-off at Dee White Field in a second doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: Henderson State 4, Arkansas-Monticello 0
Madie Green hit her seventh home run of the season and Alexia Lopez drove in three runs, as Henderson rolled past UAM 4-0 in the opening game of the series.

Although both teams had scoring opportunities in the first two innings, it was Green who got the Reddies on the board first in the bottom of the third, when she drove a ball out to left field to put HSU in front 1-0.

Henderson was not done in the inning, however. Two batters later, Kailey Reese reached on a fielder's choice to bring Lopez to the plate with two outs. Lopez, who starred in last weekend's series against East Central, stayed hot, and ripped an RBI double down the left field line to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Reddies got some help in the fifth inning, when an error by the UAM pitcher helped Reese scurry all the way to second and give HSU two baserunners, with Green standing on third after getting on base via bunt single and advancing on the misplay. Again it was Lopez who came to the plate and cashed in for Henderson, as she singled to right field to plate both runners and push the Reddies' advantage out to 4-0.

UAM, who stranded seven runners in the game, could muster only one baserunner from the fifth inning on, as Henderson starter Sydney Bonner sat down the final five batters in order to close it out for the Reddies.

Bonner, who pitched 7.0 full innings and allowed no runs, on six hits, picked up her seventh win of the year and third win in her last three starts. Lopez and Green led the way for HSU at the plate, as both finished 2 for 3 on the day.

GAME TWO: Henderson State 6, Arkansas-Monticello 4
Henderson used a six-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Christianna Camp, to get past UAM 6-4 and sweep Friday's doubleheader at Dee White Field.

With the Reddies trailing 2-0 in the second, Alexis Morton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 2-1 and bring Ashleigh Erb to the plate. Instead of Erb, however, head coach Beth Jackson called on Camp to pinch hit. The roll of the dice proved to be a winning move, as the sophomore from Bald Knob, Arkansas, hammered a ball well over the wall to the deepest part of center field, scoring four quick runs for HSU with the first home run, and grand slam, of her Henderson career.

The inning was not over for HSU, though. After Madie Green went down on strikes to give the Reddies two outs, Lindsey Williams singled and got into second base when the Blossoms' left fielder mishandled the ball. The next batter, Kaitlyn Felder, kept things going with a single to put runners on the corners. With two on and two out, Henderson rolled the dice again, this time implementing the double steal with Felder and Williams. As Felder went for second and drew the Blossoms' attention, the speedy Williams broke for home. Again the gamble paid off, as both runners slid into their respective base safely to add another run for the Reddies and make it 6-2.

Although UAM cut into the lead with two runs in the third, the Henderson bullpen kept the Blossoms silent for the remainder of the game, as Cayleigh Guthrie and Mallory Brewer gave starter Kelsey Rhine five scoreless innings of relief to help the Reddies close it out 6-4 and take both games on Friday.

Rhine got her first win of the year in the circle for Henderson, while Brewer picked up her third save. Morton finished the game 2 for 2 at the plate, while Green again went 2 for 3, improving her line to 4 for 6 at the dish on the day. Freshman Sam Smith had excellent at-bats all game and drew three walks in the win.
