Reddies Rally in the 9th-Inning to Beat Union 9-8

Joe Myers' two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth-inning lifted Henderson State to a 9-8 win over Union University, Tuesday at Clyde Berry Field.

Trailing 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Henderson scored five runs in the final three innings to beat the Bulldogs and improve to 12-6 on the year.

In the Reddie ninth, Dylan McCain started the rally with a one-out double down the left field line. After Union pitcher Brady Cook struck out Brentten Schwaab for the second out, Caleb Carr was hit by a pitch and Nolan Ryan walked to load the bases.

Myers stepped to the plate and was down in the count 1-2. The sophomore from Little Rock hit a chopper to the left side that got by Bulldog third baseman Nolen Milton which allowed McCain and Carr to score and propel Henderson to the victory.

Union, 5-13 on the season, took an early 2-0 lead in the second-inning with the help of a Caleb DeMarigny triple.

Henderson got on the board in the third-inning scoring three runs on four hits.

Bryson Haskins started things when he singled to left field followed by a Jordan Harris double to put runners on second and third with one out. After Zack Gray was retired on strikes, Brandon Pollock blasted a two-run single to tie the score at 2-2.

Pollock scored the go-ahead run when Jackson Martin doubled off the right-centerfield wall to give the Reddies a 3-2 advantage.

Union regained the lead with two runs in the fourth, but Henderson responded in the bottom half of the inning as Schwaab hit a solo home run, his second of the season.

After the Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth and seventh-innings to take an 8-4 lead, Henderson put together three hits and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Myers led off the inning with a single to right field. With one-out, Harris hit his second double of the game advancing Myers to third. Gray, looking for his first hit of the night, delivered a two-run double just inside the right-field line driving in both runners.

Henderson added a run in the eighth-inning as Nolan Ryan doubled and later scored on a Haskins single to right field.

Harris went to the mound for the Reddies in the eighth-inning and held Union in check striking out four batters which allowed the Henderson offense to rally. Harris picked up the win and improved to 1-0 on the year.

Henderson totaled 14 hits including seven doubles and a home run in the game with four Reddies having two hits each.

Harris went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Haskins was 2-for-4 with a run batted in and Pollock 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. Myers came off the bench and went 2-for-2 including the game-winner.

The Reddies return to Great American Conference play this weekend when Arkansas Tech comes to Clyde Berry Field for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
