Cody Hooten became the winningest coach in Henderson State baseball history as the Reddies beat Northwestern Oklahoma 11-1 in the first game of a double-header, Friday at Clyde Berry Field.
Northwestern Oklahoma rebounded to win the nightcap 3-2 in 10 innings.
In his eighth season at Henderson, Hooten picked up his 206
th win as the Reddie skipper surpassed legendary coach Clyde Berry.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Reddies pounded out double-digit hits as the team totaled 15 safeties including seven doubles.
The Reddies, 27-15 overall and 20-9 in the GAC, scored its first run in the second-inning as
Nolan Ryan hit a double to left-centerfield followed by a RBI single by
Dylan McCain.
Henderson added three runs in the third frame as
Bryson Haskins led off the inning with a single, with
Caleb Carr and
Joe Myers hitting back-to-back doubles as the Reddies extended their lead to 4-0.
Brandon Pollock started things in the Reddie fourth with a double to right field, followed by a bunt single by
Joseph Shepherd and a double by Haskins to drive home Pollock.
The Reddies then picked up a run on a Ranger error and a sacrifice fly by
Zack Gray to make the score 7-0.
The lead increased to 8-0 in the fifth as McCain doubled and scored on a Pollock single up the middle.
The Reddies added two runs in the seventh and again it was Ryan that started things with a double to right-center field. The Reddies would then load the bases with a pair of walks with Haskins delivering a two-run single up the middle to make the score 10-1.
Henderson scored a run in the eighth with the help of a hit batter and three walks to end the game by virtue of the 10-run rule.
Haskins and Pollock led the Reddie offense having three hits each with Haskins having a double and three runs batted in, while Pollock was perfect at the plate with a double and a pair of RBI.
Ryan was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. McCain also had two hits with a double and 2 RBI, with Shepherd going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Bryant Haralson went the distance for the Reddies on the mound striking out eight batters, improving to 8-2 on the season.
In game two, Northwestern Oklahoma led 2-0 before the Reddies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth-inning. With two outs, Henderson loaded the base with the help of three walks before
Daniel Colasanto dropped a double down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2.
The game would go into extra-innings before the Rangers plated a run in the top of the 10
th.
Henderson could not get to relief pitcher Tyler Bernhardt as the Ranger reliever struck out 10 Reddies in the final 4.1 innings without allowing a hit.
Zach Eschberger pitched 6-plus innings, allowing four hits while striking out two batters in a no decision.
Taylor Langston was the loser despite pitching four innings and striking out four batters. Â
The two teams will play the finale of the series on Saturday with first pitch set for Noon at Clyde Berry Field.
