ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got 13 kills from
Karlie Greene and 10 from
Alex Tyler, as the Reddies ran past Mid-America Christian on Saturday afternoon 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-16) to secure their 12th consecutive win. With the victory, the Reddies (13-2, 2-0) tied the program's best start through 15 matches since 1993, when Henderson opened the year 13-2 before finishing 48-4.
Nine different Reddies had kills in the win on Saturday.
Gigi Garramone led the defensive efforts with seven digs, while
Taylor Scalzi finished with 18 assists and fellow setter
Abby Blackburn had 14.
The Reddies play again on Tuesday, when they travel to Russellville, Arkansas, to take on Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m.
SET ONE
The first set did not begin the way the Reddies imagined it would, as a scrappy MACU team took the first four points to grab an early 4-0 lead and force a Henderson timeout. The stoppage refocused HSU as it responded with an 8-0 run, which featured three kills from
Karlie Greene, to go in front 8-4. The Evangels answered with a 8-4 spurt of their own to tie it at 12-12, but Henderson ensured it would not have to sweat it out down the stretch, as the Reddies' second 8-0 run of the set gave them a 20-12 lead. MACU made things interesting, and closed the deficit down to 21-18, but HSU used two kills from Tyler and a kill from
Zuzana Ondruskova to take four of the last five points and win it 25-19.
SET TWO
The second frame was all Henderson from the get-go. With the score knotted at 3-3, the Reddies used a massive 17-3 run to open up a commanding 20-6 advantage. The Evangels had no answer, as the Reddies cruised to a 25-9 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Greene had four kills during the big run for HSU and seven total in the set.
SET THREE
Henderson again took command early in the third set. Leading 7-5, the Reddies ripped off a 7-0 run, behind three kills from
Adrianna Hartmann, which pushed their advantage out to 14-5 as they looked to close out the match. The Evangels tried to make a late charge, and closed to within 23-16, but could not find the big run they needed, as Henderson got back-to-back kills from Ondruskova to win the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
