JACKSON, Tenn. — The Henderson State volleyball team has made a habit of winning the last two weeks, and on Saturday that trend continued, as the Reddies blitzed Christian Brothers 3-0 and Union 3-1 to extend their winning streak to nine matches. Nine-straight victories is Henderson's longest winning streak since 2006, when they won 13 consecutive contests.
The Reddies' next match is on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. against Arkansas-Monticello in the Duke Wells Center.
Henderson State 3, Christian Brothers 0
SET ONE
The first set proved to be the closest of the match as the two teams traded blows. With Henderson in front 7-6, the Reddies put together the first big run of the day, as they ripped off a 13-6 spurt to assert themselves and go in front 20-12. The Lady Buccaneers would not go away quietly, however, and they answered with a 9-3 run of their own to close the gap to just 23-21. Freshmen Alex Tyler and Taylor Scalzi made sure they would come no closer, as a kill from Tyler and a service ace from Scalzi ended it in the Reddies' favor, 25-21.
SET TWO
Up 1-0 in the match, Henderson made its presence felt in the second frame. After racing ahead 13-8 in the set, the Reddies closed with a big 12-5 run to distance themselves from CBU and pull away for a convincing 25-13 win. Courtney Bolf had four kills to lead the way in the set.
SET THREE
It was all Reddies again in the third, as Henderson was gifted five points on five attack errors from Christian Brothers to jump in front 10-3 in the early going. The Lady Buccaneers attempted to rally, but could never get closer than six points. With the Reddies up 15-9, they made the run that finally put it away, and finished the set on a 10-6 spurt to close it out 25-15.Â
Henderson had a balanced attack in the win. Bolf led the way with eight kills, Karlie Greene and Tyasia McGruder finished with six each, and both Adrianna Hartmann and Zuzana Ondruskova had five. Hartmann and McGruder each had five blocks, while Taylor Scalzi had 22 assists and Gigi Garramone racked up 17 digs.
Henderson State 3, Union 1
SET ONE
Things did not start as planned for the Reddies in the opening frame. With Union up 10-8 early, the Lady Bulldogs ripped off a 12-4 run to open up a 22-12 lead on Henderson. The Reddies used a mini run to trim the lead down to 24-16, but Union closed it out 25-16 to go up 1-0 in the match.
SET TWO
Henderson got back on track in the second set. With the score tied at 5-5, the Reddies put together a 13-7 spurt which helped them take an 18-12 lead. Union closed the deficit down to 20-15 at one point, but would come not closer, as HSU took five of the final six points to claim the 25-16 set win and tie the match 1-1.
SET THREE
Momentum turned Henderson's way in the third. With the score knotted at 11-11 the Reddies came up with a big 8-0 run, led by four kills from Ondruskova, to seize a 19-11 advantage. Union had no answer, as Henderson pulled away and closed it out 25-16 once again to go in front 2-1 in the match.
SET FOUR
The fourth set was close throughout, as neither team could pull away from the other. Henderson led 9-8 early before using a quick 9-6 spurt to gain the upper hand, 18-14. At that moment, the Reddies took control, and got three attack errors from Union, as well as a service ace from Courtney Bolf, to take four straight points and surge to a 22-14 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Bulldogs tried to respond, and closed the gap to 24-19, but did not have enough left in the tank, as a kill from Ondruskova won the set for the Reddies 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Ondruskova led the way with a 14-kill, 15-dig double-double, while Bolf chipped in 13 kills and eight digs. Taylor Scalzi had a career-high 37 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double.
