ADA, Okla. — Henderson State saw its four-game Great American Conference winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, as the Reddies fell to East Central 82-63 in the Kerr Activities Center.
Rel Johnson scored 16 points to lead HSU, while Mike Fofana had 12 and seven rebounds. Chris Parker was the final Reddie in double figures with 12 points, all of which came in the second half.
It was a struggle early for Henderson (12-6, 7-5), as East Central (10-6, 7-4) controlled the first half of play and carried a 39-28 lead into the halftime break at home. The Tigers out-rebounded the Reddies 27-11 in the opening period and forced 10 HSU turnovers.
The Reddies' shot alluded them to open the second half as the Tigers opened on a 13-3 run to stretch the lead out to 52-31 — their largest of the game. Henderson hit on just one of its first 14 shots after the break.
Henderson cut the deficit down to 15 on a put-back from Adrian McConnell with just under seven minutes left, but was unable to climb any closer, as ECU never let the Reddies back within striking range.
As a team, HSU shot just 37.7 percent in the game and 1-of-16 from the 3-point line. ECU shot 34 free throws on the night compared to just 19 for Henderson.
Henderson returns to the friendly confines of home on Jan. 31, when it hosts Southern Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
