Henderson Stuns Top-Ranked OKBU 3-1 in Shawnee

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Henderson State picked up its most impressive win of the season on Friday as the Reddies shocked Oklahoma Baptist 3-1 (24-26, 27-25, 25-19, 25-18).

Coming into the matchup, OKBU had won 12 straight matches and was the only undefeated team in the GAC. That all changed when the Reddies rolled into town and took down the Bison behind 17 kills from Sabrina Show and a season-high 28 digs from Kenzie Thoman. The Reddies got an outstanding performance from senior Adrianna Hartmann as well, who notched seven kills and a career-high 10 blocks.

Henderson State (10-9, 3-3) will try and complete the Sooner State sweep when they take on Southern Nazarene tomorrow at 11 a.m.

SET ONE
The first set of a hotly contested match was marked by alternating runs. With the score tied 5-5, OKBU struck first, with an 8-2 spurt that put them in front 13-7. The Reddies would respond quickly, as two kills from Courtney Bolf highlighted a scorching 8-0 run that gave HSU a 15-13 advantage.  With Henderson now in the lead, it became the Bison's turn to strike back with a 7-1 run that had Oklahoma Baptist up by four, 20-16. A 7-3 run from the Reddies pushed the Bison to the brink, 24-23, but Oklahoma Baptist stole the last three points of the set and took a 1-0 lead, 26-24.

SET TWO
Despite not being able to close out set one, the Reddies quickly took back the momentum in the second frame. Back-to-back kills from Show opened the scoring, and the Reddies ran out to an 11-5 lead. A quick 3-0 spurt from OKBU carved the lead in half, 11-8, but multiple mistakes from the Bison allowed HSU to build its biggest lead of the night, 18-11. The Bison came all the way back, and had two set-point opportunities with the score 24-23, and 25-24, but Henderson flipped the script from the first set to the second, and took the last three points to tie the match 27-25.

SET THREE
After three straight kills from the Bison to open the third set, it looked as though OKBU was poised to regain momentum. Unfortunately for Oklahoma Baptist, Henderson ripped off a 10-4 run to take a 10-7 lead. With the Reddies now leading 14-10, OKBU used a 5-1 spur to tie the set 15-15, but were unable to take the lead as HSU grabbed four of the next five points to take a 19-16 lead. For the first time in the match, there were no late-set dramatics, as HSU pulled away to take a 2-1 match lead 25-19.

SET FOUR
Henderson jumped all over a bewildered Bison team in the fourth frame as three straight kills from Show put the Reddies in front 7-0. With HSU up 16-8, the Bison made their final push, and a 6-1 OKBU run cut Henderson's lead to three, 17-14. The Reddies answered decisively however, with a 5-0 spurt of their own which gave them a commanding 22-14 lead. A few moments later, a Show kill fittingly ended the match and gave the Reddies their biggest win of the year, 25-18.
