ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State's offense was unstoppable on Saturday as the Reddies rolled over East Central 48-17 for a big Homecoming win.
The Reddies (6-1) were perfect offensively in the early going and took a 28-10 lead into the break after going 4-for-4 on their drives in the first half. All four possessions ended in touchdowns in the opening 30 minutes for HSU and were 10-plays or longer.Â
Four different players capped off each of the drives, as L'liott Curry caught a 14-yard jump ball for the first score, Querale Hall rushed in from nine yards out for the second, Logan Moragne punched in a 3-yard scamper for the third and Doug Johnson snagged a 26-yard pass from Richard Stammetti for the final touchdown of the half.
The momentum swung all the way towards Henderson in the third quarter when the Reddies out-scored the Tigers 20-0 in the period to put the game away early.Â
A 65-yard touchdown pass from Stammetti to Chase Lodree opened up a three-score lead and Braden Boykin added to it moments later with a huge 78-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was the first punt return for a score for Henderson since the 2013 season. Ayden Shurley put the final points of the game on the board for the Reddies with a 10-yard touchdown catch — the first of his career.
Henderson put up 465 yards of offense in the win with its starters playing only three quarters. Stammetti led the Reddies and was 18-for-27 on the day for 265 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. HSU ran the ball for 171 yards — 82 of which came from Logan Moragne, who finished with 16 carries and a score. Lodree went over 100 receiving yards for the second time this season with 109 yards on five receptions.
Defensively, the Reddies had six tackles for loss on Saturday. Denzel Walter had a big day with a tackle for loss and the first interception of his career in the fourth quarter. HSU has held five of its seven opponents this year to under 20 points.
The win improves Henderson to 6-1, which ties its best start to a season since 2016, and gives HSU a 4-0 record this year at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field.
The Reddies return to action next Saturday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Durant, Oklahoma to face Southeastern Oklahoma State (1-6).
