ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State turned to freshmen Adaysia Thompson and Kaitlyn Sykes for 15 combined kills as the Reddies swept past LeMoyne-Owen 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-9) on Sunday.
Thompson's nine kills and Sykes' six were both career-highs for the Reddie rookies. Sabrina Show also contributed with eight kills, while Bree Sanders notched four of her own with an 80% attacking percentage.
HSU's attackers were consistently set up by Danika Daum, who finished with a season-high 22 assists. Henderson State was excellent defensively, holding the Magicians to a 1% attack percentage.Â
The Reddies resume GAC action next weekend when they travel to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11 and Southern Nazarene at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
SET ONE
After alternating the first two points of the match, HSU set the tone early with a powerful ace from Adrianna Hartmann that jumpstarted the Reddies to a 4-0 spurt and had them in front 6-2. Lemoyne-Owen cut the Henderson lead to one, 8-7, but two kills from Courtney Bolf and two more from Hartmann gave the Reddies their biggest lead of the set, 13-8. The Magicians refused to go quietly, however, and once again cut HSU's lead to one, 15-14. The Reddies would not allow Lemoyne-Owen to tie or take the lead and used a 10-3 run to take the first set, 25-17.
SET TWO
Neither squad could find much momentum early in the second, as HSU and Lemoyne-Owen traded the first 14 points of the frame and played to a 7-7 tie. With the Magicians clinging to a one-point advantage, back-to-back kills from McKenzie Tuyo highlighted a 6-1 Reddies' run and put HSU in front, 14-10. Following two-straight points from Lemoyne-Owen to make it 14-12, the Reddies executed their most impressive stretch of the match and closed out the set in style with an 11-1 run to take it, 25-13.Â
SET THREE
Henderson State wasted no time building a large lead in the third and final frame. Two early kills from Sykes had the Reddies in front 3-0 before back-to-back aces from Show but HSU up 7-2. After the Magicians grabbed two points to make it 7-4, they offered little resistance the remainder of the set, as a 14-2 run from Henderson gave the Reddies an insurmountable 21-6 lead. A mid-court kill from Thompson highlighted the Reddies race to the finish line as HSU cruised to victory, 25-9.Â
