UAM Rally Sinks Henderson in 86-82 Road Defeat

MONTICELLO, Ark. — Henderson State led by as many as 19 points on Saturday, but Arkansas-Monticello out-scored the Reddies 60-40 in the second half to complete a dramatic comeback and win it 86-82 at Steelman Field House.

The Reddies (6-3, 2-2) got off to a terrific start on the road and held UAM to just eight made field goals and 11 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes to take a commanding 42-26 advantage into the break. HSU was buoyed in the period by four 3-pointers from Chris Owens off of the bench.

Despite dominating the first half, the lead evaporated quickly for Henderson at the start of the second. An 8-0 run to begin the period immediately got UAM back into the game and trimmed Henderson's lead to 42-34 — the closest it had been since the opening moments. From there the rally was on for UAM, as the Weevils out-scored HSU 35-24 over the next 12 minutes to complete an incredible comeback and take their first lead, 69-68, at the 5:57 mark.

It was a dogfight down the stretch, as the lead changed hands eight times. With the Reddies up 82-81 and 17 seconds remaining, Henderson fouled UAM's KJ Lesure while shooting a 3-pointer. Lesure knocked down all three shots to put the Weevils up 84-82. Needing a score on the other end, HSU could not find it, as Quawn Marshall's driving runner drew iron. UAM secured the rebound and iced the game at the line with just seconds left to cap its unlikely win.

Owens led Henderson with a career-high 17 points on Saturday. Marshall had all 12 of his points in the final seven minutes of the game, while Raekwon Rogers chipped in 14 and seven rebounds. UAM shot 56.3% from the floor in the final 20 minutes to help power its second half rally.

Henderson plays its final game of the calendar year on Wednesday when it travels to Pittsburg, Kansas to take on Pittsburg State at 6 p.m.
