WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Henderson State got down 13-2 in the first five minutes to Southwestern Oklahoma State on the road, but that was about all that went wrong for the Reddies on Thursday evening, as they out-scored the Bulldogs by 37 points the rest of the way to win 104-78 and clinch a berth in the Great American Conference Tournament.
The win is the 17th of the year overall for the Reddies, which is the most for the program since 2006-07 and is the 12th GAC victory of the season, which sets a new high-mark for conference wins since the league's inception in 2011.Â
Henderson (17-8, 12-7) started the game 1-for-13 from the field but quickly picked up the pace to erase the early deficit and take a 42-34 lead by halftime. The second half was all Reddies from the outset, as HSU opened on a 24-11 run and blitzed the Bulldogs with 62.5 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes to coast to victory on the road.
Twelve different players scored on the night for the Reddies, including five who finished in double figures. Joshua Jones led the way with a season-high 20 points on 9-for-13 shooting, while Rel Johnson chipped in 15, and Mike Fofana 13 to go along with a career-high 14 rebounds. Anthony Lupardus had 13 with three 3-pointers and Chris Owens scored a career-high 11 points in just 16 minutes of action.Â
The Reddies had a season-high 13 3-pointers and 24 assists in the win. Henderson turned the ball over just five times all evening.
HSU will go for its fourth-straight victory on Saturday in its final road game of the year, when it faces Northwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. in Alva, Oklahoma.
