ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State out-hit Lyon College on Tuesday night but walks came back to hurt the Reddies as they fell to the Scots 9-7 at Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies jumped in front 2-0 with two runs in the bottom of the first, when a throwing error scored
Danny Mitchell Jr. and a double from
Joseph Shepherd scored
Blake Wynn. The lead did not last long, as Lyon scratched a run in the second, then added three more in the fourth on three hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch, to take a 4-2 lead.
Henderson tied things up in the bottom half. With two runners on, Mitchell Jr. laced a double down the right field line to score
Daniel Colasanto and make it 4-3, then moments later Mitchell Jr. touched home on a passed ball to knot it at 4-4.
Lyon broke open what had been a tight game in the sixth and seventh, when the Scots scored five unanswered runs to seize a 9-4 advantage.
Trailing by five runs, the Reddies began to rally in the eighth, as four hits — which included back-to-back RBI doubles from
Jackson Martin and
Brandon Pollock — helped HSU plate three runs and trim the deficit to 9-7. After putting the Scots down in order to start the ninth, Henderson brought the tying run to the plate in bottom of the inning, but was unable to score again, as Lyon held on for the win.
HSU had 14 hits on the night to Lyon's eight, but walked 11 batters in the game, which helped put runners on base in all but two innings for the Scots.
Shepherd had three hits, a double, and a RBI to lead the Reddies, while Colasanto was 2-for-2 at the plate and reached base five times after being hit by two pitches and drawing a walk. Pollock also had two hits and added two RBIs on his double in the eighth.
Henderson plays again tomorrow at 3 p.m. when it hosts Union University at Clyde Berry Field.
