Henderson Rolls OKBU in Friday Doubleheader

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Mallory Brewer and Becca Almond silenced the Lady Bison bats on Friday, while Marcela Lopez made highlight plays with both the glove and the bat as the Reddies swept a Friday doubleheader, run-ruling Oklahoma Baptist 8-0 in six innings and 9-1 in five innings.

In the day's first contest, Brewer allowed just five baserunners and did not give up a walk as HSU's bats exploded for three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. The sophomore pitcher has not allowed an earned run in 10 consecutive innings.

In the second game, Henderson handed the ball to Almond, who turned in her finest performance of the season, allowing just two hits and no earned runs as she won her first decision of the year. From the end of the first to the beginning of the fifth, Almond retired 13 straight OKBU batters.

The Reddies got contributions up and down the lineup on Friday, as seven HSU batters had two or more hits during the doubleheader. From the lead-off spot, Alyssa Dixon went 2-for-2, drew two walks and scored two runs in the first game. In the second, it was Lopez's turn to jumpstart the Henderson offense, going 3-for-3 including a triple and two RBIs. Ashlyn Taylor continued her hot start with a combined 3-for-4 day. The freshman now leads the team with a .438 batting average.

The Reddies (10-8, 4-2) will finish the second half of the doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.

Game One: Henderson State 8, Oklahoma Baptist 0
After a scoreless first, the Reddies struck in the bottom of the second, when Christianna Camp went deep to right centerfield for a solo shot and her team-leading third home run of the season. HSU threatened later in the inning after putting runners on the corners, but the Reddies were unable to execute the double-steal and the score remained 1-0.

Looking to get back in it, OKBU's Aspen Grimes tripled off the centerfield wall to give the Lady Bison a runner in scoring position with no outs. However, Brewer induced three straight ground outs to get out of the inning unscathed and keeping HSU in front, 1-0.

Following an uneventful fourth, the Reddies defense kept things scoreless in the top of the fifth. OKBU's lead-off hitter slapped a single down the right field line, but was held to just one bag as the ball was cut off by Madie Green in right field.

With a runner on first and no outs, Cheyenne Demaree thought she had extra bases, but Lopez made a spectacular, full extension dive to rob Demaree of a hit. After making the catch, Lopez popped up and fired to first for an 8-3 double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Reddies used excellent plate discipline and opportunistic base running to extend the lead. Two walks gave the Reddies runners on first and second with one out before Selena Mendoza slapped a pinch-hit single to left field, loading the bases.

Heads up base running doubled the lead after a passed ball, as Cecily Rodriguez plated the Reddies' second run. After a line-out, Green and Moore drew back-to-back two out walks, giving HSU a 3-0 advantage. Henderson got its fourth run on yet another passed ball and led 4-0 through five.

Brewer worked in and out of trouble in the top of the sixth and the Reddies restarted the bats in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Taylor smashed a double down the left field line before a single from Dixon and a walk by Lopez juiced the bases.

Kailey Reese came up clutch with her first hit of the afternoon, stroking a single which scored two to put the Reddies up 6-0. With runners on second and third and two outs in the frame, a two RBI single from Abbie Moore put HSU on top 8-0, enacting the run-rule, which ended the game as Henderson prevailed 8-0.

Game Two: Henderson State 9, Oklahoma Baptist 1
Following a throwing error that allowed Oklahoma Baptist to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, it was all Henderson State in the second half of the doubleheader.

The Reddies tied it in the bottom of the second after Camp was hit by a pitch and Lindsey Williams singled to give the Reddies an opportunity to score. HSU would do just that, as Taylor came up with a two-out RBI, sending a pitch back up the box, scoring Camp from second, and tying the game 1-1.

Almond retired OKBU in order in the third and the Reddies would get all the offense they would need in the bottom half. Back-to-back singles from Lopez and Reese were followed by a perfect sacrifice from Green, giving HSU runners on second and third with one out.

After Moore was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Camp put the Reddies in front with a single, scoring one, as HSU took a 2-1 lead. With all bags still occupied, Williams and Ashleigh Erb both walked to plate two more, extending HSU lead to 4-1. Taylor kept things moving with a two RBI single into left field which scored Williams and Camp and made the score 6-1.

Lopez, who led off the inning with a single, laced a two RBI triple into left centerfield on the next at-bat, bringing home Taylor and Erb as the Reddies seized a commanding 8-1 advantage. An OKBU error allowed HSU to add one more, as Henderson took a 9-1 lead into the fourth.

Trailing by eight in the top of the fifth, OKBU needed a run to extend the contest. After two quick outs, the Lady Bison put two runners on, but Almond put the exclamation point on an exceptional outing, punching out OKBU's final batter to give HSU its tenth win of the season.
