ARKADELPHIA, Ark. —
Danny Mitchell Jr.'s go-ahead home run in the seventh inning proved to be the difference on Sunday, as Henderson State defeated Southern Nazarene 5-3 to sweep the weekend series.
The Reddies (8-12, 4-8) got on the board early and took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from
Josh Aguilar in the first. After three scoreless innings, SNU broke through in the fifth thanks to a bit of luck. With two outs, a catcher's interference gave the Crimson Storm runners on first and second for Jack Campbell, who got a hold of a ball and sent it over right fielder
Joseph Shepherd's head.
The no-doubt double became an easy triple, however, when Shepherd's foot got lodged under the fence, allowing both runs to come in and Campbell to reach third standing up. The Reddies got a ground out in the ensuing at-bat to avoid further damage, but SNU had its first lead, 2-1.
Henderson tied it back up in the sixth, as a leadoff double from Aguilar, a single from Shepherd, and a perfect sacrifice bunt from
Jackson Martin scored Aguilar from third base to make it 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, SNU moved the go-ahead run to second with just one out, but on a sharp ground ball right to him, HSU shortstop
Brandon Pollock made a great defensive play to go to third base and nab the lead runner.
After a fielder's choice put-out got them out of the inning, the Reddies struck in the bottom half, as Mitchell Jr. tattooed his second home run of the series over the right field wall to score two runs and give Henderson a 4-2 advantage.
Shepherd tacked on another for HSU in the eighth, when he singled to reach and then used heads-up base running on two SNU errors to come around and score the Reddies' fifth run.
The Crimson Storm got one back in the ninth, but reliever
Jon Youngblood made sure there would be no rally, as he picked up his first save of the season and closed out the series sweep.
Drake Salsman got his first win of the year on his second-straight quality start. Salsman pitched seven innings, struck out eight batters, and allowed just one earned run on eight hits.
Mitchell Jr. had three hits on the day, as well as the two RBIs off of his home run in the seventh, to lead the Reddies offensively. Aguilar, Shepherd, and
Ryan Wieligman each had two hits in the game.
Henderson returns to action on Tuesday when the Reddies host the University of the Ozarks at 6 p.m.
