HSU Wins One Friday, Splits Series with SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Michelle Sorensen picked up her fourth win in her last four outings as the Reddies came from behind to take the first game of the Friday doubleheader with Southwestern Oklahoma State, 6-5.

The Bulldogs won the second of two one-run contests, beating the Reddies in the series finale to split the four games with a 3-2 victory.

Freshmen Monica Monreal and Ashlyn Taylor paced the Reddies offense, as they finished a combined 6-for-14 on the afternoon.

The Reddies (17-15, 11-9) will take on rival Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday in a mid-week doubleheader with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.

Game One: Henderson State 6, Southwestern Oklahoma State, 5
Down 3-0 in the early going, the Reddies finally got things started in the third. Monreal started a two-out rally with her second hit of the afternoon, and immediately scored when Kailey Reese hammered a 0-1 pitch into the left centerfield gap for a double to put HSU on the board.

Two pitches later, Alexis Morton traded places with Reese with a double into left field which cut SWOSU's lead to just one, 3-2. Alyssa Dixon looked to tie the game with a single back up the box, but Morton was thrown out at home and the Bulldogs remained in front.

Following two strikeouts from Sorensen in the bottom of the third, the Reddies wasted no time in scoring the run that had eluded them in the previous inning. After working a 3-2 count, Ashleigh Erb sent a deep fly over the left field wall for her second home run of the year to tie the game.

SWOSU retook control in the fifth with a two-out rally of its own. With just one runner on first and two gone, the Bulldogs drove a double into the gap, scoring the runner to make it 4-3. On the very next pitch, another single from Southwestern gave the Lady Bulldogs a 5-3 lead after five frames.

Having comeback once before, the Reddies were undaunted when looking for a response in the top of the sixth. With two down and Erb on third, HSU got three singles in a row from Taylor, Marcela Lopez, and Abbie Moore to drive in two runs and tie the score at 5-5.

Moments later, with runners on the corners and two outs, Cecily Rodriguez induced a rundown play which allowed Lopez to score from third and give the Reddies their first lead, 6-5.

The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on third and just one out, but Sorensen induced two fly ball outs to help HSU escape with the win.

Game Two: Southwestern Oklahoma State 3, Henderson State 2
A leadoff double by Taylor followed by a SWOSU error gave the Reddies a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of Friday's second contest.

The Reddies put runners in scoring position in both the second and third inning, but were unable to take advantage of Mallory Brewer's pitching, and led just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third.

In the third, it was SWOSU who took advantage of defensive mishaps as the Lady Bulldogs were able to tie the game after a throwing error on the HSU infield. Southwestern took the lead on a two-out single later in the inning and led 2-1 after three frames.

The Reddies tied the game in the fifth after Moore sent Lopez home with a sacrifice fly to right field, but a run from SWOSU in the sixth proved to be the difference, as the Lady Bulldogs held on to split the series.
