Carr's Walk-Off Highlights Two Wins for HSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got an offensive explosion in game one, and a walk-off from Caleb Carr in game two, to take both games from Southern Nazarene in Saturday's doubleheader and clinch its first GAC series win of the year.

The Reddies (7-12, 3-8) will go for the series sweep tomorrow when they host the Crimson Storm at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Henderson State 8, Southern Nazarene 3
The Reddies had their bats going in game one and racked up 14 hits to roll past the Crimson Storm 8-3.

After falling behind by three runs in the early-going thanks to two SNU home runs, Henderson got things going in the bottom of the third, when four hits and two SNU errors helped the Reddies plate four runs and take a 4-3 lead. Three of HSU's four runs in the inning were unearned.

Henderson tacked on another run in the fifth, as lead-off hitter Danny Mitchell Jr. launched a 3-2 pitch out of the park to left center to make it 5-3.

The Reddies added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Joseph Shepherd, a run-scoring single from Brandon Pollock, and an RBI groundout from Ryan Wieligman to stretch the lead to 8-3, and it was Kris Priddy who closed things down in the ninth, as he picked up a four-inning save to secure the win for Henderson.

Priddy was absolutely stellar out of the pen for HSU and threw four perfect innings with six strikeouts. Starter Austin Cross earned his first win of the year in his longest outing of the season thus far. Cross went five innings and allowed just three runs on four hits while striking out four.

Pollock finished 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs to lead the Reddies offensively, while Blake Wynn, Josh Aguilar, and Bryson Haskins each added two hits.

Game 2: Henderson State 4, Southern Nazarene 3
Henderson picked up its second walk-off win of the year in the seven-inning contest on Saturday, as Caleb Carr finished off a terrific final at-bat with a single up the middle to score Ryan Wieligman and give the Reddies a 4-3 victory.

Originally, it looked as though HSU would avoid the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game. In a 2-2 tie with two outs and Pollock standing on third base in the bottom of the sixth, Bryson Haskins came through with what looked like the biggest hit of the day, when he legged out an infield single to drive in the go-ahead run and push SNU to its final three outs.

The Crimson Storm answered, however, and used a hit batter and an error to move the tying run to third base, then capitalized with a pinch-hit RBI single to center to knot the score at 3-3.

A 4-6-3 double play got the Reddies out of the top half and they quickly went to work, as the lead-off batter Wieligman reached on an error, and Danny Mitchell Jr. was intentionally walked after a sacrifice bunt from Aguilar, to give HSU two runners with just one out.

Needing a hit to end it, it was Carr who came through for Henderson, as he saw nine pitches, and fouled off six, before finally slapping a single past the diving second baseman into center field. There was no hesitation from Wieligman, who rounded third and easily beat the throw with a head-first slide into home, sending the Reddies' bench streaking out onto the field in celebration.

Henderson had just five hits in the game, but three came in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings when they were needed most. Jon Youngblood got his third win of the year out of the bullpen after helping the Reddies escape in the top of the seventh inning. Starter Zach Eschberger got a no-decision by throwing six innings and allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Hunter Collins came through with his first hit of the season to drive in the game-tying run in the fifth inning for HSU.
