Reddies Edged by No. 11 UAM Twice on Senior Day

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State had its chances in both contests of Sunday's doubleheader, but Arkansas-Monticello pulled out two wins to sweep the day and win the series at Clyde Berry Field.

The Reddies (19-19, 13-12) will look to salvage the final game of the weekend tomorrow when the teams meet the in the series finale at 1 p.m.

UAM 6, Henderson State 3 (15 innings)
The Reddies got late inning-heroics from Caleb Carr to extend the first game on Sunday, but missed opportunities haunted them in extras, as they fell to UAM 6-3 in 15 innings.

Henderson trailed 3-1 entering the ninth innings, but down to their final three outs, the Reddies put some magic together, when Carr singled up the middle in a two out, bases loaded situation. The clutch hit scored two runs and sent the game into extras tied at 3-3.

In the 10th, HSU had a a chance to end it when it loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the inning, but back-to-back strikeouts left them stranded and got UAM out of the jam unscathed.

The Reddies had another opportunity to walk it off in the 11th, when Danny Mitchell Jr. reached second with just one out. Again, however, Henderson could not plate the run, as a pop out and a ground out ended the frame.

Following three straight scoreless innings, UAM finally broke through in the 15th, as the Weevils used three hits, two walks and a wild pitch to plate three runs and seize a 6-3 advantage. Henderson had no answer in the bottom half, and fell in its longest contest of the season.

HSU's pitching was fantastic for most of the day. Starter Austin Cross went 5 2/3 innings and struck out seven while allowing three runs on seven hits. Reliever Kris Priddy back him up with 6 1/3 scoreless innings where he struck out eight batters and gave up just two hits.

The Reddies stranded 15 batters in the game and left the bases loaded twice.

UAM 7, Henderson State 6
The Reddies held the lead at two different points in the second game, and had a chance to close it out in the seventh, but the Weevils scrapped together two runs late to rally and win 7-6 to take the series.

UAM struck first in the second inning, when the Weevils used back-to-back doubles to plate a run, and an RBI single to score a second, to grab a 2-0 advantage.

The Reddies answered with their biggest inning of the doubleheader in the bottom half. Henderson opened the frame with a triple from Greyson Stevens, a double from Joe Myers, and a single from Daniel Colasanto to plate two runs and tie it at 2-2. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Brandon Pollock brought in HSU's third run with a sacrifice fly and Danny Mitchell Jr. drove in the fourth with a double, to give HSU a 4-2 lead — its first of the series.

The advantage was short-lived, as UAM flashed its power in the third with back-to-back solo home runs from John Mauldin and Kaleb Warden to knot things back up, 4-4.

Wild pitches scored runs in both the fourth and fifth for the Reddies, as they surged back in front with a 6-4 lead, and although UAM scratched one in the sixth, the Weevils left the tying run stranded at third base, which gave Henderson an opportunity to close out a one-run game int he seventh.

Three outs away from the win, the Reddies got themselves into trouble, as the leadoff man for UAM was hit by a pitch and the next batter singled to give the Weevils two base runners. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, UAM came through with excellent situational hitting, and used a groundout RBI and an infield single with two outs to plate both runs and take a 7-6 lead.

The one-run advantage held up for the Weevils, as Henderson went down in order in the bottom half.

Starter Zach Eschberger struck out eight batters in his final appearance at Clyde Berry Field, while Myers ripped two doubles to lead the Reddies at the plate.
