ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State scored six runs in the first two innings on Monday, and got a great relief appearance from
Brayden Bebee out of the pen, to hold on late and defeat No. 11 Arkansas-Monticello 8-7 in the final game of the weekend series at Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies (20-19, 14-12) used two singles, two walks, and a hit batter to bring three runs across in the first inning, then got three more on three hits in the second, to take a commanding 6-1 lead after two.
Caleb Carr drove in four of those runs for Henderson with two RBI singles.
The teams traded runs in the third after an RBI double from UAM and a solo home run from HSU's
Josh Aguilar, but with the Reddies up 7-2, the Weevils made a move in the fifth. After he held them at bay for four innings, the Weevils finally got to Reddies' starter
Drake Salsman, and used six hits in the frame to score four runs and cut the deficit down to just 7-6.
Henderson responded with an insurance run in the sixth, when
Joseph Shepherd ripped a two-out, RBI double down the left field line to extend the lead to 8-6.
An RBI double of their own in the seventh brought the Weevils back within a run, but UAM stranded the tying run in scoring position, and went down in order in the eighth, to set up a dramatic final frame.
In the ninth, a leadoff walk, followed by an infield single and an error, put the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position for UAM with just one out in the inning.
With the Reddies clinging to an 8-7 lead, closer
Jon Youngblood induced a pop out in foul territory to third baseman
Daniel Colasanto for the second out, and then got one final ground out on a hard hit ball to second baseman
Joe Myers, to help Henderson escape with a win.
The loss was just the second for UAM in its last 22 Great American Conference games.
Bebee was tremendous for the Reddies in relief, and gave them 3 2/3 innings, where he allowed just one run on three hits while striking out six. The sophomore from Arkadelphia earned his third win of the year and got the Reddies out of jams which stranded five Weevil base runners in the fifth and sixth innings.
Henderson is back in action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when it travels to Jackson, Tennessee, to face Union University.
