Reddies Win Two, Take Fifth-Straight GAC Series

DURANT, Okla. — Henderson State came through when it mattered most in both games of Friday's doubleheader to defeat Southeastern Oklahoma State 13-8 and 11-6, and secure its fifth-straight Great American Conference series win.

The Reddies scored six runs in the top of the ninth in a tie game to win the opening contest, then piled up 10 unanswered runs in the final three innings of game two after falling behind 6-1 to pull out the victory.

HSU is now 19-16 overall and 13-10 in GAC action on the year. The Reddies are 12-2 in their last 14 conference games.

The final contest of the three-game series comes tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Durant, Oklahoma.

Game 1: Henderson State 13, Southeastern Oklahoma 8
The Reddies broke open a tie game in the top of the ninth inning in the first contest on Friday to defeat SOSU 13-8 and open the road series with a win.

Henderson held a lead as large as 6-1 at one point, but Southeastern scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth to erase the deficit and send the opener to the ninth inning in a 7-7 tie.

After a issuing a walk to the leadoff batter, the Savage Storm got the next two batters out on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out, leaving the Reddies with a runner on second base and out one to work with.

One out was all Henderson needed. A fielding error on SOSU kept the inning alive and a walk to Daniel Colasanto loaded the bases for Brandon Pollock, who continued his sensational play of late with a RBI single through the left side, which pushed the Reddies in front 8-7.

The self-inflicted damage for the Savage Storm continued when a wild pitch brought in the second run of the inning to give HSU a 9-7 lead. The Reddies then did some damage of their own, as a double from Danny Mitchell Jr. drove in two more and a single from Joseph Shepherd brought Mitchell Jr. home and quickly stretched the lead out to 12-7. Shepherd came in to score moments later on another throwing error from Southeastern to increase Henderson's advantage to 13-7.

The Savage Storm got one back in the bottom half, but the six-run cushion was more than enough, as Jon Youngblood (4-1) closed things down for his fourth win of the season.

Pollock was again tremendous and went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and a RBI to lead Henderson. Both Shepherd and Mitchell Jr. each had three RBIs in the game on two hits.

Four of the six runs scored by HSU in the ninth came unearned. The Reddies took advantage of eight Southeastern Oklahoma errors in the game with eight total unearned runs.

Game 2: Henderson State 11, Southeastern Oklahoma 6
Henderson was on the opposite side of a 6-1 deficit in game two on Friday evening, but the result was the same, as the Reddies scored 10 unanswered runs in the final three frames to roar back and take both games of the doubleheader with an 11-6 victory in the seven-inning contest.

After the two teams traded runs in the first and second innings, SOSU had a massive fourth in the shortened game. The Savage Storm scored five runs on three hits, as well as two HSU errors, to take control with a 6-1 lead.

The rally began for the Reddies in the fifth, as they got three runs back courtesy of an RBI double from Pollock, a wild pitch, and Savage Storm throwing error, to trim the deficit to 6-4.

Southeastern went down in order in the bottom half and the Reddies momentum continued in a big way thanks to two solo home runs in the sixth off the bats of Joe Myers and Josh Aguilar. The shots from the two sluggers capped the comeback for HSU, as the Reddies tied the game 6-6.

With the game still knotted at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, Henderson made its move. A one-out single from Caleb Carr set the table for Bryson Haskins, who hit his second home run of the season and third of the final two innings for the Reddies, to send HSU in front, 8-6. A fielder's choice RBI from Colasanto, a wild pitch score from Jake Dunn, and a RBI double from Aguilar added three more in the inning for Henderson, as a five-run deficit was suddenly transformed into a five-run lead.

Down to their final three outs, the Savage Storm had no answer for the onslaught. Brayden Bebee (2-1) closed out his second win of the season in style to sweep the day for HSU.

Bebee, who entered in the fourth, was almost untouchable in his 3 2/3 innings of work, as he allowed no runs on just one hit and struck out five SOSU batters.

Nine different Reddies had a hit in the win, including Haskins, Myers, and Aguilar, who all had two. Greyson Stevens belted the first home run of his career to give HSU its first run back in the second inning.
