Home Runs Lift HSU to 8-2 Win Over Southeastern

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State hit four home runs, including two by freshman Monica Monreal, as the Reddies grabbed the fourth and final game of the weekend 8-2 over Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Unfortunately, the Reddies were unable to get the series victory as Southeastern won the day's first contest, 9-2.

Monreal finished the series a combined 7-for-14 with three doubles and three home runs.

The Reddies (20-22, 14-16) will be back in action on Tuesday when HSU hosts Ouachita Baptist for a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Game Two: Henderson State 8, Southeastern Oklahoma State 2
Despite falling behind 1-0 after a home run in the top of the first, the Reddies were undeterred during their first chance to hit in the bottom half of the inning. Marcela Lopez led off with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on an infield single from Madie Green.

With runners on the corners, the Savage Storm allowed Henderson to tie the game at 1-1 with a wild pitch that scored Lopez and advanced Green to third. Moments later, Abbie Moore gave the Reddies their first lead of the day with a single to deep centerfield which scored Green easily. The bases were cleared, however, when Moore was thrown out trying to stretch the base hit into a double.

With the bases empty, HSU added one more in the first when Monreal launched a ball over the right centerfield wall for her second home run of the weekend and third of the year to give the Reddies a 3-1 advantage.

Becca Almond worked a lightning quick one, two, three inning in the top of the second, allowing HSU to keep their momentum after three hits in the first.

Leading off the bottom of the second and facing a 0-2 count, Nadia Ballarin protected the plate and was awarded first base after being struck in the lower body by an errant pitch. Following a single from Ashlyn Taylor, Green roped one down the left field line, scoring Ballarin from second to make the score 4-1, Reddies.

HSU would add one more the inning behind two errors from the Savage Storm infield and led 5-1 heading into the third.

After going quietly in the second inning, Southeastern put together their biggest threat of the game in the third. The Storm's eight and nine hitters started the frame with back-to-back singles before advancing to second and third after a sacrifice.
With runners in scoring position and just one gone, Almond induced a pop and snagged a hard hit grounder to get out of the inning with a 5-1 lead.

Although the Reddies did not threaten in the third or fourth, they put the game out of reach in the fifth. Moore and Monreal led off the inning with back-to-back home runs to left field to give Henderson State a 7-1 lead with two swings of the bat.
It was the first time this season the Reddies have hit consecutive home runs, as well as the first time an HSU player has had two long balls in one game.

Following two quick outs, Cecily Rodriguez got involved in the action, and hit the third home run of the inning, this one to right centerfield, to widen Henderson's advantage to 8-1.

The Savage Storm would scratch a run across in the top of the seventh, but the Reddies won easily, 8-2.

Game One: Southeastern Oklahoma State 9, Henderson State 2
The Reddies couldn't get the bats going in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader and were held without a hit through the first three innings as Southeastern grabbed a 2-0 lead.

HSU's first opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth when Monreal ripped a double down the left field line with two outs. Moments later, Kailey Reese sent an infield single back up the middle, but Monreal was thrown out at home trying to score from second to end the inning and keep the Reddies in a 2-0 hole.

Following back-to-back walks and an error to start the top of the fifth, Southeastern had the bases loaded with nobody out. The Savage Storm doubled the lead on a fielder's choice and an error by HSU's infield to make the score 4-0.

HSU inched closer in the bottom of the fifth when Taylor missed a home run by a matter of inches. Despite missing out on what would have been her fourth home run of the year, Taylor wound up with an RBI double as Lindsey Williams came around to score from first, cutting Southeastern's lead to 4-1.

The visitors from Durant put the game out of reach, however, with a five run explosion in the top of the seventh, and had the Reddies in a 9-1 hole with just three outs to work with.

Taylor came through with another RBI double, this time scoring Ashleigh Erb, but it wasn't enough, as HSU fell 9-2.
