CLINTON, Miss. — Double-digit kills from four different Reddies helped Henderson defeat Mississippi College in a five-set thriller on Saturday afternoon (25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 10-25, 16-14).
Sabrina Show led HSU with 15 kills, while Courtney Bolf, Tyasia McGruder, and Adrianna Hartmann all had 10 or more for the Reddies. Abby Blackburn picked up a double-double with 29 assists and 17 digs, while MaKenzie Thoman turned in another solid defensive performance with 21 digs.Â
Henderson State (6-6, 1-0) took Spring Hill College to the wire earlier Saturday, but was unable to sweep the afternoon as the Reddies fell 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 7-15) to the Badgers.Â
The Reddies will wrap up their Mississippi swing when they face Mississippi Valley State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.Â
Game 2: Henderson State 3, Mississippi College 2Â
SET ONE
After trading the first two points of the match, both teams ripped off alternating runs to send the first set to an early 6-6 tie. Trailing 11-10, HSU ripped off three-straight points, highlighted by a kill from Tyasia McGruder, but was unable to get any separation as MC tied the set 15-15. Trailing 18-16, the Reddies went on their most impressive spurt of the set, grabbing five-straight points behind three kills from Show, to lead 21-18. It remained tight down the stretch, but the Reddies took the first set 25-23.Â
SET TWO
Similarly to set one, neither team could find a rhythm in the second, as HSU and Mississippi College found themselves in a 9-9 tie. The Lady Choctaws took control, however, with a 7-2 run and grabbed a 16-11 lead. HSU got no closer than three as MC tied the match with a 25-21 win.
SET THREE
For the first time in the match, HSU was able to jump all over the Lady Choctaws in the third set. With the score tied 2-2, the Reddies got kills from McGruder and Hartmann, highlighting a 6-1 run which put them in front 8-3. Mississippi College responded to make it a one-point game 10-9, but another 5-0 spurt from HSU put the Reddies on top by six, 15-9. Mississippi College cut the lead to three, but never seriously threatened again, as the Reddies took a 2-1 lead, 25-18.Â
SET FOUR
In the fourth set it was MC's turn to take an early lead. The Lady Choctaws took the first three points of the set and built a commanding 16-4 advantage. HSU was unable to muster a comeback as Mississippi College took the set easily and tied the match, 25-10.Â
SET FIVE
Things looked dire for the Reddies early in the shortened fifth set, as the Lady Choctaws took a commanding 10-5 lead. The Reddies, however, with their backs against the wall, got six combined kills from Hartmann and Bolf on a 7-1 run that put HSU in front 12-11. Mississippi College made it match point at 14-13, but Henderson responded with three-straight points to complete the rally, take the set and win the match, 16-14.
Game 1: Spring Hill College 3, Henderson State 2Â
SET ONE
Spring Hill got off to a hot start on Saturday afternoon to take an early 7-3 lead on HSU. However, a quick 4-0 spurt from the Reddies tied the first set 7-7. The Reddies were unable to pull in front, and Spring Hill regained its footing to grab a 16-13 lead. HSU trimmed the deficit to two, 17-15, but Spring Hill wouldn't allow the Reddies to get any closer, as they took the first set 25-18.
SET TWO
The Reddies flipped the script in the second and got off to a hot start to take an 11-5 lead. A 4-0 Spring Hill spurt made it 11-9, but the Reddies answered with a 7-1 run of their own and had their biggest lead of the match, 18-10. The set was far from over, however, as the Badgers ripped off eight-straight to tie the set 18-18. Fortunately, it was the Reddies who would go on the last run of the second frame, ending on a 7-2 spurt to tie the match with a 25-20 win.
SET THREE
Each team came into the third set looking to take an all-important 2-1 lead, but it was Spring Hill who took a 13-8 advantage early on. Slowly but surely, the Reddies began to crawl back into the set. A quick 4-1 spurt behind back-to-back kills from Bolf made it a two-point game, and after two Spring Hill points made it 16-12, HSU ripped off a 8-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. The Reddies could not hold the lead though, as the Badgers battled back to win 26-24 and take a 2-1 lead.
SET FOUR
The fourth set of a hotly contested match played out much like the third. The Badgers took an 11-6 lead and looked poised to run away with the set and the match, but a 7-2 Reddies run tied the set at 13-13. Down 15-14, Henderson took advantage of multiple Badger mistakes, and got timely kills from Hartmann and McKenzie Tuyo, to spearhead a big run which pushed the Reddies to a 22-15 advantage. HSU cruised to a 25-18 set win and tied the match 2-2.Â
SET FIVE Â
Unfortunately the Reddies could not carry their fourth set momentum to the fifth and final frame, as Spring Hill jumped out to an 8-2 lead. HSU cut the deficit to three, 9-6, but a dominant 6-1 run from the Badgers gave them a 15-7 win and the match victory.
