ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Trailing by six points with under three minutes remaining on Saturday afternoon, Henderson State rose to the occasion and closed the game on an 11-1 run to defeat No. 19 Southeastern Oklahoma State 67-63 in the Duke Wells Center.
The win snapped a six-game winning streak for the league's preseason favorite, kept the Reddies unbeaten at home this season, and moved HSU into a tie for first place in the conference standings with 10 GAC contests to go.
For the second-straight game, the Reddies (14-4, 9-3) got off to a slow start offensively, particularly from behind the 3-point line, where they were just 2-of-14 in the opening half. The cold shooting, and 20 points in the first 20 minutes from Southeastern's Kevin Buckingham, left Henderson trailing 32-27 at the break.
Henderson began to slowly chip away to begin the second half and used a 3-pointer from
Chris Owens at the 14:11 mark to cap a 13-6 run which gave the Reddies their first lead, 40-38. The next seven minutes were a battle, as the lead changed hands twice and neither team was able to secure an advantage larger than four points.
With HSU up 52-50 after a jumper from
Raekwon Rogers and 7:06 left in regulation, Southeastern put together what looked like the run that would decide the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by two knifing layups from Adam Dworsky, powered a 12-4 spurt which gave SOSU the lead 62-56 with just under three minutes to go.
The Reddies refused to go away, however, and got a put-back dunk from Rogers, two big stops, and a jumper from
Rel Johnson, to close the deficit to 62-60 at the one minute mark. Needing a third defensive stop, Henderson got it, as it forced a Savage Storm shot clock violation to retain possession. Down by two points, HSU turned to Johnson once again, who drove the baseline, finished through a foul at the rim, and knocked down the ensuing free throw to seize the lead for the Reddies, 63-62, with 18 seconds left.
A foul on the other end with 11 seconds remaining sent Southeastern's Dworsky to the line for a one-and-one with a chance to tie or take the lead for the Savage Storm, but the 85% free throw shooter missed the front end and
Chris Parker was fouled after a rebound from HSU. After Parker knocked down both shots to increase the lead to 65-62, Henderson purposefully fouled Dworsky again to prevent a 3-point attempt with four ticks left. A make of the first shot was followed by an intentional miss, but
Mike Fofana secured the rebound, was immediately fouled, and knocked down two shots on the other end to ice the huge win for the Reddies.
Rogers led the way for Henderson with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Owens added 11 points. Ten different players played double digit minutes in the win for HSU. The Savage Storm had three players play all 40 minutes and their bench combined for just 13 total minutes played. SOSU's 63 points was their second-lowest offensive out-put of the season and their lowest scoring game in GAC play.
The Reddies will hit the road next week when they travel to face Southern Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Bethany Oklahoma, and Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
