BETHANY, Okla. — Henderson State got a career-high 20 points from Raekwon Rogers and valiantly defended Southern Nazarene's two stars, but the Crimson Storm got 25 points off the bench from Tyler Williams to edge the Reddies 71-67 at the Sawyer Center.
Rogers' 20 on 9-of-14 shooting and 12 rebounds led the Reddies, while Rel Johnson finished with 11 points and Chris Parker added nine.
The Reddies (14-5, 9-4) had to survive a tidal wave of momentum early from SNU's Jhonathan Dunn, who hit his first three shots from the floor to fire up the home crowd, give the Storm an 8-2 lead and break the school's all-time scoring record. Henderson weathered the tide, however, thanks in large part to Rogers, who had eight points in the first seven minutes for HSU.
Trailing 24-18 with 6:44 remaining in the first half, the Reddies put together a terrific stretch, and used two 3-pointers from Quawn Marshall to highlight a 13-4 run which surged Henderson to its first lead of the game, 31-28, at the 1:59 mark of the first period. SNU responded with a 7-0 spurt of its own to end the half, though, and took a 35-32 advantage into the break.Â
Henderson caught fire to begin the second and hit eight of its first 11 shots to surge to its largest lead, 44-41, at the 14:52 mark. SNU found its footing over the next four minutes and put together a 13-5 run to recapture a 54-49 advantage with 10:47 to play.Â
That slim lead would prove to be insurmountable for the Reddies. HSU trimmed the deficit down to just three points on three separate occasions in the game's final 10 minutes, but after the hot shooting to start the half, Henderson went cold down the stretch, hitting on just five of its final 16 shots as it fell just short, 71-67.
The Reddies shot 49.1% from the floor, out-rebounded SNU 35-22 and held Dunn to a home season-low 20 points, but turned the ball over 21 times and finished the game just 7-for-16 at the free throw line. Williams, who had a game-high 25 points on 8-of-9 shooting for the Crimson Storm, had scored just 38 total points on the year coming into Thursday night.
HSU returns to action on Saturday when it faces Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. in Shawnee, Oklahoma.Â
