ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State shutdown No. 16 Southeastern Oklahoma State's powerful offense on Saturday on the way to a 77-72 win. The Savage Storm came into the contest shooting 47.4% as a team, the best mark in the GAC. The Reddies held SOSU to just 36.5% shooting which included a 2-for-14 performance from 3-point range.
The Reddies put four players in double-figures, as
Karrington Whaley led the charge with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Hailey Estes notched her seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while
Maci Mains extended her double-digit scoring streak to seven games with 11 points off the bench.
After sitting out of Thursday's win with a nagging injury,
Pink Jones returned to give the Reddies a big boost. The senior scored nine of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to help Henderson beat Southeastern for the fifth-straight time.
Henderson State will play four of its next five contests on the road, starting with a matchup at Southern Nazarene on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
1st Quarter
Southeastern's offense had no trouble getting good looks early as the Savage Storm took a 7-4 lead with 6:33 in the first quarter. As she's done so many times this season, reserve
Maci Mains jumpstarted HSU with a driving layup which turned into a an 11-4 run that was capped off by the first of three 3-pointers from Estes. The Savage Storm and the Reddies went back and forth for the rest of the frame with HSU leading 21-16 after 10 minutes.
2nd Quarter
Both teams continued to trade buckets early in the second quarter when
Madi Nichols, coming off a career-high on Thursday, scored five straight HSU points to give the Reddies their largest advantage, 32-24. HSU would build the lead to as many as 12 and led by 10, 38-28 heading into halftime.
3rd Quarter
After the Storm started the second half with four straight points to make it 38-32 the Reddies would use a balanced offensive attack to take complete control. HSU got points from Whaley, Mains,
Lexis Weber,
Lani Snowden, and Estes on a 17-2 run which put HSU in front by 15, 49-34. However, SOSU ended the quarter on a 13-6 run to make it a single digit affair heading into the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter
Henderson State looked as if they had retaken the game's momentum as they rebuilt a double-digit lead, 65-54, but Southeastern refused to roll over. The Savage Storm went on an 11-2 run to pull within one of the Reddies, 67-66, with 2:11 to play. Badly needing a basket, the Reddies turned to
Pink Jones, who scored six straight points to give HSU a 72-66 with less than 90 seconds to play. Following a stretch of free throws, and down 75-72, Southeastern missed a 3-pointer to tie the game and two more free throws by Mains gave the Reddies a 77-72 victory.
