Henderson Drops Season Opener to UCO, 10-4

EDMOND, Okla. — Greyson Stevens hit two home runs for Henderson State, but the Reddies fell to Central Oklahoma 10-4 in the season opener on Friday evening.

Stevens, who finished 2-for-4 with the two long balls and three RBIs, was the bright spot for a Reddies' lineup that mustered just four hits against UCO's vaunted stable of arms.

The Bronchos got on the board first in the second inning, when they cashed in a single with two runners in scoring position to take a 2-0 lead. Stevens answered for HSU in the top of the third when he led off with a solo shot to make it 2-1.

UCO extended the lead in the bottom half of the inning and used three walks, one hit and a hit batter to scratch three more runs and open up a 5-1 advantage. Henderson had just one single in the next three innings as Central Oklahoma tacked on insurance runs in both the fifth and the sixth to pad a 7-1 cushion.

Henderson got two runs back in the top of the seventh after Nick Whitley reached on an error and Stevens drove his second homer over the fence in right field, but the Bronchos added one in the bottom half of the frame and two more in the eighth to pull away for the win in the opener for both squads.

Central Oklahoma, who boasts one of the deepest pitching staffs in the country, limited the Reddies to just four hits and racked up 19 strikeouts in the win. HSU starter Matthew Baker, who took the loss, along with Austin Cross and Ryan Ratliff, combined to strikeout 10 batters and allow eight hits with nine walks for Henderson.

The Reddies (0-1) return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they face Pitt State of the MIAA.
