ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The Reddies scored seven-straight points in less than a minute to take a 63-61 lead with 4.6 seconds to go on Thursday night, but Southwestern Oklahoma State's Makyra Tramble hit a buzzer-beating layup as time expired to send the game to overtime, where the Bulldogs pulled away to defeat HSU, 77-70.
Hailey Estes led the Reddies with 16 points, 13 rebounds and six steals. That stat line gave the senior a double-double in her fourth-straight game and was the fourth time she had notched six or more steals in a contest this season.
Karrington Whaley added 15 points for the Reddies on 5-of-10 shooting, while
Maci Mains added 10 off of the bench.
Lexis Weber was unstoppable on the glass for HSU, pulling down a career-high 18 rebounds in 26 minutes.
The Reddies will play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
1st Quarter
Both teams struggled to establish any offensive rhythm in the first quarter. For the Lady Bulldogs, a lid seemed to be on the basket as SWOSU finished the opening frame just 5-for-23 from the field. For the Reddies, they were bit by the turnover bug, committing five giveaways by the 7:56 mark of the first. Although HSU shot 7-for-14 from the field, 12 turnovers kept SWOSU in it and ended the opening quarter in a 14-14 tie.
2nd Quarter
The Reddies solved the turnover problem in the second quarter, but lost their shooting touch, going just 6-for-20 from the field in the period. SWOSU put up the exact same shooting numbers, as neither team led by more than four during the entire first half. The Reddies and the Lady Bulldogs combined to shoot 4-of-30 from 3-point range and were tied 30-30 at the intermission.
3rd Quarter
Henderson State had to wait almost three minutes for its first points of the second half when
Lani Snowden hit her first and only 3-point field goal of the game to give HSU a 33-32 lead. Â The Reddies led 37-35 with 6:17 left in the quarter after a bucket by Weber, but SWOSU went on a 14-5 run to lead 49-42 with 26 seconds left. Badly needing some momentum, Jones stepped up huge for the Reddies as time ticked down in the third, hitting just her fourth 3-pointer of the year as time expired to make it 49-45 heading into the fourth.
4th Quarter
The Reddies used the momentum from Jones' 3-pointer to score the first five points of the fourth quarter to take a 50-49 lead. Despite having to wait over four minutes for the next field goal, HSU's next bucket gave them a 54-53 lead with 5:07 to play. After an
Ashley Farrar jumper made it 56-53, the Reddies went ice cold and would not score for the next three minutes, as SWOSU used an 8-0 run to pull ahead 61-56. After a bucket from Estes and two missed free throws by the Lady Bulldogs,
Hailey Estes connected on a 3-point field goal to tie the game at 61-61 with 13 seconds left. Seconds later, SWOSU turned down the opportunity to take the last shot of the game and then compounded that mistake by fouling
Karrington Whaley, who hit two free throws with 4.6 seconds left. Unfortunately, the Reddies could not get the stop they needed, as Tramble drove to the basket for a layup as time expired and sent the game into overtime, 63-63.
