Baseball Hammers ATU in Finale to Win the Series

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State jumped all over Arkansas Tech in the final game of the weekend series and claimed an 11-1 win to take two of three contests from the Wonder Boys.

Tech salvaged a game in the series with a 7-5 victory in the early game on Saturday.

Caleb Carr had an excellent doubleheader for HSU and finished the day 5-for-7 with four runs, five RBIs, two walks and two home runs. The junior from White Hall, Arkansas had just two home runs in his entire career entering the day.

The Reddies (4-9, 2-4) will play at home again on Tuesday when they host Delta State at 6 p.m.

Game 3: Henderson State 11, Arkansas Tech 1
Henderson's bats came alive in the series finale with Arkansas Tech on Saturday, as the Reddies racked up 13 hits in just seven innings to hammer the Wonder Boys 11-1 and win their first GAC series of the year.

Starter Hunter Lewis and reliever Matthew Baker combined to pitch all seven innings for HSU and held Tech to just five hits. The pair struck out nine batters and walked just two in the win.

Kaden Argenbright was 3-for-4 in the clinching game with two RBIs. Carr had two hits and recorded three RBIs which came on a two-run home run in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth. Cade Tucker also went deep for Henderson with a two-run bomb in the first.

ATU went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Reddies' offense exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom half to seize a commanding 6-1 lead. Lewis sat the Wonder Boys down in order in each of the next three frames and HSU added to its advantage in the fourth, as a walk from Jordan Rusnak was followed by Carr's home run to put HSU up 8-1.

Tech again went quietly in the fifth and the Reddies again tacked on an insurance run on their turn to bat on Carr's RBI single which plated Josh Aguilar. The Wonder Boys got their first hit since the first inning in the sixth but could not scratch a run. Rusnak got in on the action in the bottom half for HSU with a two-RBI single which cemented the final score and let Henderson clear the bench in a convincing victory.

The Reddies hit .419 as a team in the finale and were 12-for-23 (.522) with runners on base.

Game 2: Arkansas Tech 7, Henderson State 5
A 3-0 lead in the fifth inning did not hold up for the Reddies in the early game Saturday, as Tech came back and got a home run late to win it 7-5 and salvage a game in the series.

HSU scored two runs in the second inning on RBIs from Greyson Stevens and Danny Mitchell Jr., then got another on an RBI from Tucker in the fifth, to go in front 3-0.

A deep shot from ATU in the sixth brought the Wonder Boys within a run, 3-2, and Tech completed the rally in the eighth when it scored three runs on four hits and an error to take a 5-3 lead.

Carr came to the rescue for Henderson in the bottom of the eighth, when he hammered a pitch over the wall in left center with two outs in the inning to tie the game, 5-5. The momentum was short-lived for the Reddies, however, as the Wonder Boys answered with a two-run home run of their own in the ninth which proved to be the difference.

Carr led HSU with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, two runs scored and two RBIs. Reddies' starter Spencer Taack had a good showing on the mound and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
