SHAWNEE, Okla. — Coming off of an impressive 2-0 victory in the series finale against Arkansas Tech last weekend, the Reddies were unable to keep the momentum going on Friday as they dropped a pair of games to Oklahoma Baptist, 7-5 and 2-0.
Alyssa Dixon was Henderson's most consistent hitter on Friday, combining to go 4-for-7 with two runs scored. Mallory Brewer worked another solid outing for the Reddies, but was not given the run support she needed to grab a victory. In her last three appearances, Brewer has pitched 19 innings while only giving up two earned runs.
Henderson State (6-12, 2-4) will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
Game 1: Oklahoma Baptist 7, Henderson State 5
Already trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Reddies got into a deep hole when OKBU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second. The Bison would eventually add four more runs on three hits to take a 5-0 lead.
Henderson started to chip away at the deficit in the top of the third when Kaitlyn O'Quinn's single moved Dixon to third with two outs. Moments later, the speed of the HSU lineup forced OKBU into an error which allowed Dixon to score and make it 5-1. The very next batter, Abbie Moore, doubled the Reddies' run total with a single up the middle to score O'Quinn and pull within three, 5-2.
The Bison pushed the lead back to five runs in the bottom of the fourth after two runs on just one hit. If not for that pair of runs that made it 7-2 OKBU, Henderson could have tied it in the top of the seventh when Ashlyn Taylor sent a three-run blast over the left field wall to score Dixon and Monica Monreal.
After a fielding error allowed O'Quinn to reach, the Reddies brought the tying run to the plate, but could not get any closer, as HSU fell 7-5 in the series opener.
Game 2: Oklahoma Baptist 2, Henderson State 0
Henderson State had a frustrating finish to Friday's doubleheader as HSU left 11 runners on base.
In the top of the first, a Dixon single and a walk to Moore gave the Reddies runners on first and second with one out, but Henderson could not cash in with the game's first run.
With the score still 0-0 in the top of the second, Henderson got another opportunity and loaded the bases without notching a single hit, but OKBU's starting pitcher Aspen Younce induced a fielder's choice to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the second, the Bison took advantage of HSU's mistakes and took a 1-0 lead without registering a hit.
The Reddies went down in order in both the third and the fourth, but put two runners on base in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Unfortunately, Henderson just could not find that clutch hit, as OKBU added one more run in the sixth to win, 2-0.
