Whaley Sets All-Time Blocks Record in Loss

SEARCY, Ark. – In the same building where senior Karrington Whaley registered the Henderson State single-game blocks record three years earlier, the Springdale, Arkansas native became the all-time blocks leader in HSU women's basketball history on Thursday evening. The star forward was two shy of the record coming into the contest.

Additional career efforts from Sonni Martin and Ashley Farrar were not enough, however, as Harding utilized a 47% shooting night to take the win, 92-73.

The game started with Harding scoring the first four points, followed by an 8-0 run for the Reddies which forced a quick Lady Bisons timeout three minutes into the contest. Both teams followed the pause in action with a barrage of scoring. Henderson hit six of its next seven field goals while Harding connected on eight of its next 10.

The Lady Bisons kept up the hot shooting with an 11-0 run to close out the quarter, building an eight-point advantage, 28-20. Harding hit on a blazing 63% of its field goals in the first 10 minutes.

After recording a block in the first quarter, the second period was highlighted with Whaley registering her second block at the 4:52 mark to become the all-time blocks leader in Henderson State history. Whaley finished with six blocks, bringing her record total to 112.

After a second-quarter that saw Harding close the period in similar fashion to the end of the first with an 11-2 run, Harding went into the locker room with a 10-point lead, 51-41. Farrar put together a 17-point first half on 7-of-13 shooting, including going 3-for-5 from deep range.

Already up double figures, Harding put together an 11-0 run in the third, while Henderson saw a scoring drought that lasted just over two minutes. The cold shooting from HSU and big HU run helped the Lady Bisons take their biggest lead up to that point, 71-47, before eventually carrying a 73-53 cushion into the final period.. The Reddies closed the third by going 2-for-11 on field goals and shot just 22.2% in the quarter.

Although the Reddies did their best to scrap back into it in the fourth, the deficit proved to be too much, as Harding kept HSU at bay and pulled away for the 92-73 win. Henderson was outscored 22-4 in second chance points and out-rebounded by 18. Harding also bested the Reddies in fast-break points, 16-2.

Farrar ended her night with a game-high 23 points. Martin turned in the best game of her young HSU career, and knocked down four triples en route to a 13-point effort.

After a week of road bouts, Henderson State (1-2) will return to Arkadelphia on Saturday when it faces Arkansas-Monticello at 2 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
