ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — No. 18 Henderson State used a dominant defensive performance on Saturday afternoon to cruise past Southern Nazarene 34-3 at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium and Ruggles Field.
The victory improved the Reddies to 8-1 on the year and kept them in the hunt for an NCAA Playoff berth and the GAC title with two games remaining in the regular season.
Defense was the story for Henderson against the Crimson Storm, as the Reddies held SNU to just 236 total yards in the game. HSU racked up 14 tackles for loss on the afternoon, including 4.5 from Deldric Shields.
The Reddies jumped in front from the get-go and got two rushing touchdowns from Duce Sproles, as well as a 3-yard touchdown reception from L'liott Curry, to take a 24-3 lead into the halftime break. SNU was limited to just 55 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes and got its only score of the game on a 46-yard field goal as the second quarter expired.
Henderson's defense continued to shine in the third, as it came up with the Reddies' only touchdown of the second half. Jake Chatman found the end zone for the second time this fall when he picked off Crimson Storm quarterback Jarvis Davis and returned it 62 yards for a score. Chatman previously had a 100-yard pick-six against Southern Arkansas.
The HSU offense had the ball just three times in the last 30 minutes, but the Reddie defense rose up on all four SNU possessions and forced two turnovers and two turnovers on downs to keep the Crimson Storm out of the end zone and help Henderson improve to 8-1.
Adam Morse finished 25-for-34 for 264 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the win. Morse was also the Reddies' leading rusher with eight carries for 66 yards. Henley Bland had the best game of his career for HSU and caught five passes for 85 yards to lead the receiving corps.
Southern Nazarene's rushing offense was stifled on Saturday, as Henderson held the Storm to just 74 yards on 35 carries (2.1 yards per attempt).
The Reddies will make their final Oklahoma road trip of the year next Saturday when they head to Shawnee, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m.
