Late OBU Field Goal Sinks Henderson Saturday

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Ouachita Baptist's Gabe Goodman made a 53-yard field goal with less than a minute left on Saturday afternoon to help the Tigers knock off No. 13 Henderson State 31-28 at Cliff Harris Stadium.

It was a difficult start for Henderson across the street, as an early interception and a three-and-out gave OBU two short fields which the Tigers converted into a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

The Reddies broke through in the second to get back into the game. After a misplayed kickoff gave HSU the ball on its own 3-yard line, Henderson marched down the field anyway for a 12-play, 97-yard touchdown drive which was capped off by a 1-yard score from Duce Sproles.

A fourth down stop by the defense at the Reddies' 31-yard line on Ouachita's next possession gave the ball and momentum back to HSU. Henderson capitalized four plays later when Adam Morse hit L'liott Curry for an 18-yard touchdown which tied the game going into the break.

The Tigers regained their lead on the first possession of the second half and marched 65 yards in 12 plays to regain a 21-14 advantage. The Reddies responded once again, as Sproles got into the end zone for the second time on the afternoon with a 20-yard burst which knotted things up.

The tie was short-lived thanks to OBU's Kendel Givens, who busted a 34-yard run to set up the Tigers' fourth score of the day. A 2-yard leap from TJ Cole gave Ouachita a 28-21 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

Trailing by a score, Henderson's defense came up with a massive stop at the halfway mark of the fourth quarter and gave the ball back to the HSU offense with 8:25 to go. After starting at their own 22-yard line, the Reddies methodically worked their way down the field and finally tied the game again, 28-28, on an 18-yard touchdown grab by Curry with 3:06 remaining.

Ouachita Baptist quickly put itself in good position again after a 23-yard run from Cole gave the Tigers the ball on the Henderson 37-yard line with under two minutes to play. The Reddie defense stood tall again, however, and allowed OBU just one more yard on its next three plays to set up a 4th-and-9 at the 36.

With the game hanging in the balance, Goodman came up big for Ouachita and drilled a 53-yard field goal to put the Tigers up 31-28 with just 56 seconds to go. Henderson's offense, with two timeouts remaining, moved the ball to the OBU 46-yard line after getting it back, but had a pass fall incomplete on 4th-and-1 to end the final drive.

The Reddies out-gained the Tigers 386-364 on Saturday. Morse finished with 303 yards of total offense after throwing for 267 and running for another 36. Curry, who caught the two passing scores of the afternoon for HSU, had eight catches for 73 yards and drew three defensive pass interference calls in the game. Xavier Malone had six catches for 99 yards. Damarion Parham had a huge day for Henderson defensively and finished with 14 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
