Henderson Flips Early Script, Rolls Past Harding

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State fell behind by 12 points in the opening minutes on Thursday night, but outscored Harding by 32 the rest of the way to roll past the Bisons 82-62 at the Duke Wells Center and notch its fourth-straight win.

Raekwon Rogers led 10 different players who scored for the Reddies with 14 points and nine rebounds. Xavier Davenport and Damian Dear, who both scored 10, were the only other players in double figures for HSU. Graham Chenault had a career-best nine points and three assists.

It was not the start the Reddies (9-7) envisioned for their final regular season home contest. Henderson missed its first eight shots from the floor and watched Harding's Romio Harvey score nine quick points to pace the Bisons to a 17-5 lead at the 13:31 mark of the first half.

Down by 12 points and needing a response, HSU got one in short order. The Reddies put the clamps down on the defensive end of the floor and the game turned on its head, as Henderson answered with a 18-0 run in the blink of an eye to quickly erase the deficit and seize a 23-17 lead at the 10:45 mark.

The lead continued to grow and the tide continued to turn in Henderson's direction as back-to-back dunks from Jeremiah Toney and Rogers extended the lead out to 36-24 for the Reddies. After watching their big lead slip away, the Bisons did their best to get back into the game and closed the half on a 9-4 spurt to cut the HSU halftime advantage to 40-33.

Any hope Harding had of rallying was quickly erased by Henderson at the beginning of the second half. The Reddies hit nine of their first 12 shots out of the break and used a massive 21-4 run to open the period and seize a 61-37 lead with 13:39 remaining. The hot second half start capped an even larger 56-20 run that HSU put together after falling behind early.

The result was never in question from that moment on, as the Bisons never again got within 20 points. Every healthy player on the roster saw the floor in the final minutes for Henderson as the Reddies cruised to their fourth-straight win.

HSU held Harding to 35% shooting on the night and out-rebounded HU 47-29. The Reddies had 14 assists to the Bisons' seven and led for the final 31 minutes after trailing to start the game.

Henderson plays its final regular season game on Saturday when it travels to face UAM at 4 p.m. in Monticello.
