Henderson Locks Down Ouachita Late in 59-55 Win

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State held Ouachita Baptist to just two points in the final 4:52 on Monday night to rally from a late deficit and win its sixth-straight over the Tigers 59-55 at Bill Vining Arena.

Jeremiah Toney and Raekwon Rogers each finished with 13 points to lead the Reddies and combined to grab 17 rebounds in the win. Damian Dear added 10 points and hit three 3-pointers. The six-straight wins over OBU is the longest winning streak by either team in the series since HSU won six-in-a-row over the Tigers from 1999-2001.

Much like the first matchup between the cross-street rivals, Henderson got off to a terrific start. The Reddies jumped in front 11-5 and then used four-straight 3-pointers — two from Dear, one from Graham Chenault and one from Quawn Marshall — to streak out to a 23-7 advantage at the 10 minute mark.

The lead grew to as many as 18 for HSU, who held a 27-9 cushion with 8:20 remaining in the half, but after starting the game 10-for-17 from the floor, the Reddies went cold. Henderson struggled to adjust to an OBU zone defense and scored just three points over the remainder of the period. Ouachita Baptist capitalized with a 14-3 run to cut its deficit to just 30-23 at the break.

The Tigers trimmed the Reddies' advantage to 38-33 to begin the second half, but a 3-pointer and an assist to Tomislav Miholjcic by Chenault returned HSU to a double-digit lead, 43-33. OBU refused to go away, and used some stifling defense over a rugged next 10 minutes to put together a 20-7 run and take a 53-50 lead with 4:52 to go in the game. The lead was the first for Ouachita since 3-0 in the first minute of play.

Trailing for the first time all evening, Henderson got a boost from Toney, who tipped in a missed layup and then knocked down two clutch free throws to put the Reddies back in front, 54-43, at the 3:43 mark. Following a stop, HSU got its biggest break of the night when Rogers threw up a desperation 3-pointer with one second remaining on the shot clock and saw it fall through off of the glass. The banked in triple was the first of Rogers' career and increased the lead to two possessions.

OBU's only basket of the last 4:52 on the other end cut the Reddies' advantage to 57-55 with 2:28 to play. Ouachita got three chances to tie the game in the final moments, but Henderson's defense stood tall and forced three-straight empty trips by the Tigers. Late free throws from Toney and Dear provided the final dagger as HSU held on to win it, 59-55.

The Reddies' defense kicked into gear and locked down Ouachita over the final five minutes of play. OBU was just 1-for-7 from the field after taking the lead.

Henderson returns home on Thursday night to take on Arkansas-Monticello for the third time this season at 7:00 p.m.
