CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Henderson State responded to a scoreless first game with a nine-hit game two performance, yet the Reddies left Delta State's University Field with two losses.
Kaitlyn O'Quinn registered two hits in each game while
Bre Jones had herself a two-hit outing in game two of the afternoon.
Â
GAME ONE
The first game of Tuesday's doubleheader was all Delta State as 10 hits from the Lady Statesmen compared to 4 hits for HSU had DSU taking the first game, 7-0. The Reddies threw two pitchers out there, with
Becca Almond starting the game and
Krystal Lindsey relieving her after three innings.
Â
Almond and Lindsey combined for three strikeouts, only accumulating three earned runs. The other slew of runs the Lady Statesmen saw came in large part from the four fielding errors committed by Henderson.
Kaitlyn O'Quinn claimed two hits in her three at-bats to lead the offensive effort for the visiting Reddies.
Â
GAME TWO
The scoring drought ended for HSU in game two, thanks to a two-run bomb from
Abbie Moore early in the first inning. With zero outs and
Kaitlyn O'Quinn on second, Moore sent one over the center-field wall to see the early 2-0 lead, to which the Lady Statesmen responded with two runs of their own in their at-bat.
Â
Mallory Brewer started the second game as she kept Delta at bay for the remainder of the game, throwing three strikeouts while only giving up four hits. Unfortunately, the pitcher in the other dugout did much of the same, as seven innings was not enough to decide a winner. With the score knotted up at 2-2, the game went into the top of the eighth.
Â
The Reddies made good on the extra time early on, with a Jones walk while the bases were loaded giving HSU the one-point advantage, 3-2. Again, Delta St. responded with the appropriate response, scoring a single run to keep the game alive, 3-3.
Â
After committing four errors in the first game, HSU, up until the ninth inning, had seen zero mishaps in the field. After coming up empty in the top of the ninth, DSU's Taylor Picou scored from her starting position of second base per the non-conference extra innings international rule on a throwing error, giving the Lady Statesmen the victory, 4-3.
Â
Henderson State (3-16, 2-9) will host its second GAC weekend series this Friday and Saturday when Northwestern Oklahoma St. comes to Dee White Field. The 3-game showdown begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 4 p.m.
