Henderson plays its final regular season match of the year on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts rival Ouachita Baptist on Senior Night.
SET ONE
HSU got off to a terrific start on its home floor and opened the first set on a 7-2 run. The Reddies took their largest lead of the frame, 17-9, behind three-straight kills from
Brae Denton,
Brittany Barnekoff and Robinson, but the Golden Suns would not go away. Trailing by eight points, ATU put together a big 14-7 run over the next several minutes, which trimmed Henderson's lead to just 24-23. After the Reddies dropped the previous three set-points, Robinson made sure the set would not slip away and provided the set-winning point on a kill. Mendoza Quintana had seven kills in the set for HSU, who hit .268 as a team in the frame.
SET TWO
A 5-1 start by Arkansas Tech put the Reddies in a hole to begin the second set, but HSU countered with a big 13-6 run of its own to seize a 14-11 advantage. Henderson was able to maintain the lead over the next several minutes, but with the set winding down, the Golden Suns tied the score on two different occasions at 22-22 and 23-23 as they attempted to tie the match. HSU had other plans, however, and got a kill from Blackburn and an ATU attack error to take the final two points and go in front 2-0 with a 25-23 win.
SET THREE
Henderson came out firing in the third and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but with its back against the wall, Arkansas Tech kicked it into gear. After trailing by three through the first seven points, the Golden Suns finished the set on a huge 23-11 run which allowed them to claim a 25-16 win and extend the match to a fourth set. ATU had an attacking percentage of .250 in the period.
SET FOUR
The fourth set was a wild, back-and-forth affair. The lead changed hands eight different times and both teams had opportunities to win set points. With the score knotted at 23-23, the Reddies and Golden Suns traded eight-straight points to make it 27-27.
Kaitlyn Sykes finally broke the rally with a service ace, which put HSU in front 28-27 after back-to-back points. However, with a chance to win the match Henderson saw Tech take the final three points of the set to win it 30-28 and force a fifth and final frame.
SET FIVE
It was a dream start for the Reddies in the fifth, as they used three-straight Tech attack errors and kills from Mendoza Quintana, Denton, Sykes and Robinson to jump out to a commanding 9-3 lead. ATU refused to fold, and closed the gap to 10-8 with a quick 5-1 run. Faced with a possible change in momentum at the crucial point of the match, Henderson found another gear. The Reddies got two more kills from Mendoza Quintana, as well as a service ace from
Trinity Sharp, to help close the set on a 5-1 run and win the match with a 15-9 victory.
