ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State saw six runs in the third inning to combat a seven-run deficit in game one, then added a two-run homer in the seventh to combat a four-run deficit in game two, but both comeback attempts proved too little too late as Henderson State dropped the day one doubleheader to ATU, 8-6 and 7-5.
Â
Addie Jordan registered three hits on the afternoon while
Kaitlyn O'Quinn had two hits and earned four walks to get on base a grand total of six times through the two contests.
Macie Pampell,
Czoey White and
Monica Monreal all had home runs in game two of the doubleheader.
Â
GAME ONE: Arkansas Tech 8, Henderson State 6
Early on it looked like it was going to be a quick game as Arkansas Tech saw a 7-0 lead only two and a half innings in. Henderson's fortune changed, however, in the bottom of the third as six runs cut the Golden Suns advantage to one, 7-6.
Â
Starting things off with an
Ashlyn Taylor double followed by an
Alyssa Dixon single, Taylor scored on a passed ball to get the scoring going. Moments later, after O'Quinn saw one of her four walks, a throwing error from Tech's third baseman allowed
Czoey White to reach first while O'Quinn and Dixon were sent home.
Â
The Reddies kept up the momentum with an
Abbie Moore double, scoring White. With the score 7-4, a Jordan sacrifice bunt preceding a
Taylor Sledd double scored both Moore and Monreal, who got on base via getting hit by a pitch, ending a wild at-bat that saw six runs, four hits and one error.
Â
Unfortunately for HSU, Tech's third pitcher of the first contest Maddy Prough was able to hold the one-run lead as ATU added a run in its final at-bat, taking game one, 8-6.
Â
GAME TWO: Arkansas Tech 7, Henderson State 5
Arkansas Tech built another daunting lead early on as a 4-0 advantage heading into the fifth inning and starting pitcher Kayla Cartwright serving up a no-hitter up to that point loomed large over the Reddies.
Â
This time around, the fifth inning was the breakout inning for Henderson as back-to-back homers from Pampell – her first of the season – and White gave HSU life, bringing the score to 4-2. Both teams responded with one-run innings in the sixth as the scoreboard showed 5-3 in favor of Tech heading into the final frame.
Â
A two-out single from Arkansas Tech's Caitlyn Wells scored two Golden Suns, extending the lead to 7-3. With it looking like the Reddies' scoring runs had run out, Monreal served up some last second hope in HSU's final at-bat, seeing her second dinger of the season in what was a two-run blast to bring Henderson back to within two runs, 7-5.
Â
With HSU already being faced with two outs, however, two batters later spelled game over for the Reddies as Arkansas Tech escaped with the 7-5 win in game two. The Reddies (11-22, 8-15) will have a chance to salvage the four-game series tomorrow in the second doubleheader of the series beginning at 12 p.m. with game two to follow.
