Baseball Defeats SOSU Twice to Win Road Series

DURANT, Okla. — Henderson State got a nail-biter, extra-inning win in the first game on Sunday, and followed it up with a blowout victory in game two, to sweep the doubleheader and steal the weekend series from Southeastern Oklahoma State.

Down to their final out, the Reddies rallied to defeat the Savage Storm 9-7 in the nine-inning game, then used a pitching gem from freshman Ethan Perry and an offensive explosion to cruise to a 16-1 win in the seven-inning contest. Henderson compiled 32 hits in the two games.

With the series win, HSU improves to 20-14 on the year and 15-12 in GAC play. Henderson returns to action this weekend when it crosses the street to face rival Ouachita Baptist in a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

GAME 1: Henderson State 9, Southeastern Oklahoma 7 (10 inn.)
The Reddies saw another five-run lead vanish in the first game on Sunday, but responded with a run in the ninth, and two more in the 10th, to outlast SOSU 9-7 and tie the series at one game apiece.

Multiple players had big games at the plate for Henderson, who racked up 19 hits in the win. Bryson Haskins was perfect on the day and finished 5-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Greyson Stevens was 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, three runs and an RBI, while both Danny Mitchell Jr. and Kaden Argenbright had three-hit games.

Joe Myers was 1-for-5 in the contest but drove in two runs with the 20th home run of his career in the first inning. Myers is now one of only nine players in program history to hit 20 or more home runs.

Matthew Baker pitched a scoreless six innings for HSU to earn a no-decision. Baker allowed just three hits and struck out three Savage Storm batters. Taylor Langston earned his second win of the season for the Reddies by pitching the final two innings and surrendering no runs on two hits. Langston struck out four of the nine batters he faced.

Henderson jumped in front 4-0 in the first two innings behind Myers' home run and RBI singles from Josh Aguilar and Mitchell Jr. After five scoreless innings for both sides, Stevens' solo home run in the seventh made it 5-0 for HSU, but Southeastern was far from out of it.

SOSU used a pair of two-run home runs in the bottom half of the seventh to cut the lead down to just 5-4 for the Reddies. Another RBI single from Mitchell Jr. in the eighth gave Henderson a two-run cushion, but it was not enough, as a three-run bomb from the Savage Storm completed their comeback and put HSU in a 7-6 hole with just three outs to work with.

Needing a run in the ninth to stay alive, the Reddies got a walk from Alec Lewis and a single from Aguilar to put a runner in scoring position. With Henderson down to its final out, Haskins came through once again and drove a single through the left side of the infield to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

HSU went to work in the top of the 10th. A SOSU error, a single and a walk loaded the bases with no one out for Argenbright, and the freshman delivered, as he smacked a two-run single into right field to put the Reddies back in front, 9-7. Southeastern brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, but Langston closed the door for HSU to even the series.

GAME 2: Henderson State 16, Southeastern Oklahoma 1
HSU got a gem from freshman Ethan Perry and scored 11 runs in the first three innings of the second game to roll to a 16-1 win and take the series from the Savage Storm.

Perry earned his fifth win of the year for the Reddies by going five innings, allowing three hits and no runs. The native of McKinney, Texas gave up just one hit through the first four innings and struck out five batters.

Henderson's offense gave Perry tons of room to breathe in the series finale. The Reddies smacked 13 hits and plated 11 of their 16 runs in the first three innings — including eight in the third — to break the contest open early. Every player in the starting lineup recorded a hit in the win for HSU.

Greyson Stevens and Joe Myers led the charge at the plate for the Reddies. Stevens was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and four runs scored, while Myers went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Myers moved into third all-time at Henderson in RBIs on the day and now has 109 for his career.

The Reddies scored in every inning but the seventh in the final game of the series, but the knockout punch came in the third. Already leading 3-0, HSU scored eight runs on four hits, three walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches to seize an 11-0 advantage. Henderson's largest lead of the day was 16-0.

HSU took advantage of eight walks and four hit batters in just seven innings by the SOSU pitching staff.
