ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
Mallory Brewer finished her career in third place in terms of innings pitched while
Monica Monreal closed out 2021 on an eight-game hitting streak, but Henderson State came up just short in its final two games of the season to Oklahoma Baptist, 3-0 and 3-2, respectively.
GAME ONE
Outside of the top of the second inning,
Becca Almond only allowed OKBU three hits and zero runs. Unfortunately for the pitcher, the Bison found all three of their game-total runs in that top of the second frame, plating three runs off four hits for the 3-0 early lead.
Monreal,
Alyssa Dixon and
Czoey White all registered single hits in the outing, but that was all Oklahoma Baptist's pitcher Aspen Younce saw against her as HSU fell in the opening contest of the twin bill, 3-0.
GAME TWO
Mallory Brewer returned to the circle in what would be her final game of her HSU career. The four-year junior only gave up five hits before OKBU registered any runs, allowing the Reddies to see a brief lead in the bottom of the fourth.
After a three straight singles from
Abbie Moore, Monreal and
Addie Jordan,
Crysta Larey, who was pinch-running for Moore, scored on a wild pitch followed by an
Alyssa Dixon ground-out which resulted in a Monreal run for the 2-0 lead.
That 2-0 hole was all Oklahoma Baptist needed to get going as it rattled off three hits for three runs in the very next inning, stealing the lead away from Henderson as the home team faced a one-run deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Despite a last second effort from the Reddies to plate the tying run in the final at-bat of the season, the Bison escaped with the victory, 3-2. Under first-year head coach
David Martinez, Henderson State finished its season at 13-31 overall and 10-23 in conference.
