HSU Sweeps KWC, Goes 1-1 on Day One of Tournament

OWENSBORO, Kentucky – Henderson State responds to its loss earlier this morning with a sweep of tournament host Kentucky Wesleyan, 25-21, 25-21, 25-14. The win gives HSU the 1-1 split on day one of the Kentucky Wesleyan Tournament.

For the second match in a row, Mya Robinson led the team with 11 kills while Christiane Uzoh delivered an extremely efficient performance with a .692 attack percentage off nine kills. Taylor Scalzi put up 18 assists, carrying a six assists per set average throughout the contest.

SET ONE
Kentucky Wesleyan came out on fire, scoring the first three points of the match before HSU went on a 4-1 run to tie it up at 4-all. The Panthers maintained a steady lead early on before the Reddies came through with another run at 10-8 KWC, putting together five unanswered points to see a 13-10 advantage.

Henderson was able to keep Kentucky Wesleyan at bay the rest of the way, coming out with the 25-21 first set victory. The Reddies hit .429 in the first frame compared to .154 from the Panthers.

SET TWO
Similar to how it went in the first set, KWC came out firing early on, building a 10-6 advantage, thanks in large part to five errors from HSU. Once the visiting Reddies got that under control, however, a 9-1 run gave Henderson a 15-11 lead that it would not relinquish.

Despite a .265 attack percentage from the home team, HSU came away with the 25-21 second-set triumph. Uzoh and Robinson combined for nine kills in the frame.

SET THREE
All three sets played out in similar fashion, with Kentucky Wesleyan keeping things close before Henderson would proceed to go on a big run. With KWC holding a 4-3 edge, the Reddies rattled off seven straight points to see a 10-4 lead.

From that point on, HSU never held a lead of less than four, even building its biggest lead of the contest at 19-10 before taking the set and the match at 25-14.

Henderson State (5-2) will have two more matches tomorrow, beginning with Montevallo at 9 a.m. and finishing with Lee University at 3 p.m. The Reddies will tie their best start to a season under head coach Phil McDaniel with a pair of wins day tomorrow.
