OWENSBORO, Kentucky – Henderson State wins its first match of the second day of the Kentucky Wesleyan Tournament, defeating Montevallo in four sets, 3-1. With the win, HSU broke the Falcons' three-match winning streak against the Reddies.
Makenzie Thoman had a season-high 26 digs while dishing out three assists.
Mya Robinson responded off a poor start where she held a sub-zero attack percentage through the first two sets, finishing with 12 kills and a .143 attack percentage.
SET ONE
Set one was all Henderson St. as its opened the match with a 10-3 run to take the immediate advantage as the Reddies forced UM into five errors through the first 13 points of the match.
Henderson continued to build on the quick start, building to its biggest lead of the match at 21-8 before taking the opening frame, 25-13. The Reddies were firing on all aspects, carrying a .389 attack percentage through the first frame.
SET TWO
The match's second stint saw five lead changes within the first 22 points before evening out with neither team seeing more than two-point lead three quarters of the way through the set. Henderson appeared to break it open when it claimed a 21-17 advantage until the Falcons went on a 5-0 run to take the slim 22-21 edge.
Off three straight attack errors from UM, HSU was able to capitalize with a Robinson kill to escape the second set with the 25-22 victory as the Reddies stood one set shy of its sixth sweep of the season.
SET THREE
Montevallo had other plans as the Falcons raced out to a 7-1 lead. Henderson was able to come back and make it close, even taking numerous leads deep in the set at 20-18 and 21-19. The Falcons were able to extend play, however, with an 8-4 run to close the frame, pulling out the 27-25 victory.
SET FOUR
It was the Reddies' turn to get out to the fast start, scoring 9 of the first 13 points of the frame. That lead was held throughout, seeing its largest lead of the set at 20-13 before coming out with the 25-18 win, taking the overall match, 3-1.
Henderson saw its second best hitting set of the match in the fourth frame with a .147 attack percentage compared to .049 from the Falcons.
With one more victory, Henderson State will tie its best start to a season through nine matches under head coach Phil McDaniel. The Reddies will have that opportunity against Lee University at 3 p.m. for the final match of the Kentucky Wesleyan Tournament.
