SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Henderson only posted one sweep all of last year in the shortened 2021 spring season. It did not take long for the Reddies to match that season total as Henderson started off the 2021 season in style, posting a 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 sweep of Texas Woman's University in the first match for the Reddies at the Greenstay Inn & Suites Drury Invitational. Prior to this match, HSU had lost the previous three meetings to the Lady Pioneers.
Violeta Mendoza Quintana played one of her best matches as a Reddie, carrying an attack percentage of .452 with a match-high 14 kills on 31 total attacks.
Mya Robinson and
Christiane Uzoh backed up Mendoza Quintana as each registered 11 kills, with Uzoh besting Mendoza Quintana after a .588 attack percentage performance.
Henderson State held Texas Woman's to a .150 attack percentage, including a -.029 attack percentage in the second set. The Reddies saw their best attacking set in the final frame, putting up 19 kills to only two errors for a .378 attack percentage.
SET ONE
The two teams alternated scoring throughout much of set one as fans saw five lead changes. After falling behind 18-17, the Reddies put together five straight points to take a 22-18 lead. After the Lady Pioneers were able to claw their way back into the match, Robinson delivered two of her 11 kills in back-to-back fashion, giving Henderson the 25-23 opening-set win.
SET TWO
After a hard fought first set, HSU came out firing in the second frame, racing out to its biggest lead of the entire match at 10-3. Though TWU was able to close the gap at 10-7, HSU grew the lead once more to six at 16-10. The Reddies maintained a 5-7 point lead the rest of the way, taking the second set, 25-16.
SET THREE
Texas Woman's put the second set behind them, holding a consistent lead the majority of the third set. After an eventual 18-15 advantage in favor of the Lady Pioneers, HSU put together a 7-2 run that gave the Reddies the 22-20 lead, forcing TWU head coach Jeff Huebner to call a timeout in an attempt to salvage the match.
Texas Woman's was able to rattle off a couple more points, but it was not enough as Henderson slammed the door with a
Kaitlyn Sykes kill off a
Madison Hatt assist to end the set and match with a 25-23 third-set victory.
Henderson State's next match in the Greenstay Inn & Suites Drury Invitational will be today at 4 p.m. against Missouri Southern.
