SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Henderson State made it a perfect 6-0 during day one of the Greenstay Inn & Suites Drury Invitational, claiming its second sweep of the tournament after defeating Missouri Southern, 25-13, 25-22, 25-20.
Â
Mya Robinson bested her 11-kill performance earlier in the day with a 14 kill day, along with a .500 attack percentage.
Taylor Scalzi saw 16 assists in each match she played today, pushing her past Sariah Boney into 10th place all-time with set assists with 1393.
Â
"I thought we came out real strong in the first match against TWU…we played solid defense and were really scrappy and were able to keep that ball alive and turn that into good opportunities," head coach Phil McDaniel said. "In the second match we got a little careless but overall very happy with the day."
Â
SET ONE
The Reddies kept up the momentum from the first match as they came sprinting out of the gate. With the set still undecided at 14-11, HSU scored nine unanswered points with the help of back-to-back aces and three attack errors from MSSU to grab a 23-11 lead on the way to a 25-13 first-set victory.
Â
SET TWO
After HSU picked up where it left off with a 5-2 lead early on in the set, MSSU was able to keep it close during most of the frame, eventually tying the contest at 21-all.
Â
The Reddies closed the deal, however, with a 4-1 run to claim the 2-0 lead. Robinson saw seven of her 14 kills in the second stint to give HSU the advantage.
Â
SET THREE
Henderson came out quick for the final set of the day, jumping out to a 6-1 head start. After building a double-digit lead at 18-8, MSSU began to climb back in an attempt to further play.
Â
Missouri Southern went on its own 11-4 run to close the margin to three at 22-19. That was as close as the Reddies allowed them to get though, as HSU sealed the deal at 25-20.
Â
"[This] sets us up for a chance to go undefeated on the weekend," McDaniel said. "You can't get to 4-0 without taking care of business in this first match tomorrow."
Â
Henderson State (2-0) will take on Lemoyne-Owen tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. before battling the tournament host Drury Panthers at 3 p.m.
