SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Henderson State closed out the Greenstay Inn & Suites Drury Invitational after defeating LeMoyne-Owen, 3-0, before falling to Drury, 3-2.
Henderson State started the day off with yet another sweep, downing the Lady Magicians in straight frames, 25-15, 25-7, 25-7, to make it nine straight set victories to open the 2021 season. The Reddies held LOC to a -.105 attack percentage throughout the three sets.
Violeta Mendoza Quintana and
Mya Robinson each led the way with nine kills while being responsible for a .692 and .600 attack percentage, respectively. Freshman
Andrea Roland hit a perfect 1.000 with four kills on four total attacks.
The Reddies saw two more set wins against Drury in the final match of the Greenstay Inn & Suites Drury Invitational, but it came on the backend of DU's two sets as the Lady Panthers saw a 2-0 lead before HSU knotted it up at 2-all. Drury was able to pull the match out, however, as it won the final set, 15-9.
Mendoza Quintana and Robinson each posted a double-double performance in the second match of the day as the Chihuahua, Mexico, native posted 25 kills and 18 dig while Robinson delivered 18 kills and 12 digs.
Makenzie Thoman came into the day only three digs shy of passing Nazaneen Rafiq for 10th most digs all-time in program history and ended the day as a member of the Top-10 club after posting 23 through the two contests.
Next up for Henderson State (3-1) is Christian Brothers for the home opener Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 6:30 inside the Duke Wells Center. Last season, HSU was 4-1 at home and holds a two-match winning streak against CBU.
