ADA, Okla. - Two first-quarter fumbles and four overall turnovers for Henderson State had the Reddies playing catchup from the early going as HSU fell to East Central Saturday afternoon, 31-10. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak over the Tigers for Henderson.
The Reddies missed two field goals on the day and recorded a season-low 341 total yards, while seeing just over 20Â minutes of possession time compared to ECU's 40 minutes and 41 seconds.
Landon Ledbetter, getting his first start since the season-opener, went 14-for-22 for 184 yards, one score and one interception. Malone registered his GAC-leading ninth touchdown of the season off seven catches for 96 yards.
Henderson's defense forced an ECU punt on their first drive. Two plays into HSU's drive, however, saw the first fumble as
Korien Burrell coughed it up at the Reddies' own 32 yard line. The redzone defense showed up, holding the Tigers to their first field goal of the game. The next series had
Landon Ledbetter put the ball on the turf to give East Central another short field.
The Reddie defense continued to hold its ground, giving up just another field goal to see a 6-0 deficit despite two first-quarter turnovers. Henderson got its first touchdown on its first series of the second quarter with a short pass from Ledbetter to
Xavier Malone to take its first lead of the contest, 7-6.
Neither offense got anything going the rest of the quarter until 41 seconds remaining in the half when East Central got a couple chunk pass plays and then a successful two-point conversion to head into the half with the 14-7 lead.Â
The third quarter was quiet in terms of scoring outside of HSU's
Tristan Heaton 34 yard field goal after his first miss of the game to close the gap to 14-10, but East Central opened it up in the fourth, putting the game away with 10 straight points, capped off with a 21-yard field goal from Tiger kicker Alexis Lopez with 3:21 remaining in regulation to capture the 31-10 victory.Â
The Reddies (4-2) will stay on the road, albeit returning to the Natural State, when they head to Searcy, Arkansas, to face current-No. 11 Harding Saturday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
