MONTICELLO, Ark. - After trailing by two at intermission, Henderson State outscored Arkansas-Monticello 38-32 in the second half to come away with its second conference win of the season, 64-61. The visiting Reddies went 22-of-30 from the free-throw line compared to 7-of-10 for the Boll Weevils.
For the second straight game,
Alvin Miles led HSU with 14 points, followed by
Franck Kamgain with 13. Junior transfer
Zyon Patterson scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half to help fuel the comeback. Four Henderson players made at least four freebies, led by
Malik Riddle with six on eight attempts.
The back-and-forth contest revealed five lead changes within the first four minutes and 26 seconds, with another lead change threatening at 11-11 with 13:02 on the clock. From there, neither team saw another point over the next three minutes.
A Boll Weevil free-throw broke the scoreless drought, while HSU took another two minutes to add to its total. At that point, UAM had built a 15-12 advantage and carried a three to six-point lead the rest of the way until the break.
After Arkansas-Monticello had established its second seven-point lead of the opening 20 minutes at 27-20, Henderson closed the frame scoring six of the final eight points, sending both teams into the locker room at 29-26 in favor of UAM. Henderson's Miles kept up the scoring from the last game as he led the Reddies with nine points, followed by Kamgain with seven.
Henderson came out of the break fast, taking its first lead since 15:52Â of the first half at 30-29 less than two minutes into the return to action. Despite the quick change in momentum, Arkansas-Monticello remained on the Reddies' heels with the lead never getting greater than five points until just before the under-eight media timeout.
Patterson broke the five-point barrier with the Reddies' lone three of the second half at the 8:19 mark, giving HSU it's largest lead up to that point at 50-42. Though the Boll Weevils threatened several times down the stretch, key buckets at key times and good free-throw shooting gave Henderson its second GAC win and first conference victory on the road, 64-61.
Henderson St. (4-3, 2-0) will get a week off before leaving Arkadelphia for the last time in 2022 when the Reddies head to Russellville, Arkansas to take on the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys Monday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m.
